Introducing Sydney's Post-Punk Rockers Johnny Hunter

Sydney post-punk rockers Johnny Hunter's debut EP is titled 'Early Trauma'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Fresh off the release of their 'Hollow Man' single, Johnny Hunter now celebrate their debut EP 'Early Trauma'.

The EP has been a long time coming for the Sydney outfit, who've been cutting through the noise, owning slots at BIGSOUND, Mountain Sounds and Yours & Owls, while also supporting The Saboteurs, Kirin J Callinan and City Calm Down.

"As young adults our talent was unparalleled in wasting opportunities with blissful ignorance," the band says.

"From those decisions stemmed 'Early Trauma'. Each song on this EP is in some way an ode to wasted youth. The energy and time spent on unimportant moments, and the realisation that without those moments we would not be who we are today.

"It's our way of reverse engineering the painful memories we carry from our past decisions, so we can grow, develop and with time ultimately heal those scars."

The band have also glared at the COVID troll, announcing a run of dates around the country including Melbourne, this spring. Confident bastards. Scroll down for the dates.

Who is Johnny Hunter? A project started in the deep south of NSW that quickly clawed its way into the forever dynamic Sydney scene through the help of our own start-up label.

We sound like… A mix of the new and the old.

Our first gig... Was in 2017 at The Botany View Hotel supporting Polish Club.

We knew it would be difficult to get noticed in Sydney so we started our own record label, put on a few shows for our friends and local bands. Then when the right gig came along we threw ourselves on the bill. That was such an incredible first gig.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision… As soon as we started writing we thought that the name Johnny Hunter was perfect.

In the studio we usually... Scream and bicker. To the naked eye it seems immensely unproductive, but to us it's the perfect combination.

If we could tour with anyone… Nick Cave. In all honesty it would be a quite a weird pairing but the venues we could potentially play at on a tour with him would be once in a lifetime opportunity. We also hear he loves a good cheeseboard, so eating cheese with Nick Cave would also be a tick off the bucket list.

Social media is... Volatile.

My favourite app at the moment is... None of us have phones.

To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... On the first Melbourne show of our Press Club tour I dropped a Young Henry's on the floor and it sprayed like a jetstream all over the lead singer Nat; she then proceeded to throw her drink in my face and needless to say the ice was broken.

Life on the road can be… Manic.

If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Vodka sodas.

The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was… Nothing. We are fearless.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Noel Fielding, he did a fantastic job with The Horrors and we feel like he'd get it.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Richard Webb – someone who could bring the mood up; David Mitchell – someone who could kill the vibe; Mark Zuckerberg – so we could bully him collectively as a dinner party.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? If you were meat eaters, a slow-cooked lamb shoulder with a Mediterranean cous cous; and if you were vegan a lentil ragu with charred cabbage and olive tapenade.

No matter the expense, send me a case of… Vodka.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was… Everyday of our lives.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Packing up after a show.

Do you have any phobias... please explain? Xander's sh.t scared of belly buttons.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? 'The Amazing Race', because we do it every time we tour.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Xander. I'd run my belly button in his face.
