Sydney sister pop duo Like Angels latest single is 'Lose It'.
A track that encapsulates the climactic moment when someone or something pushes you to your limits, it was produced by Philippe-Marc Anquitil (Little Mix, One Direction, Jessie J, Ruel). The pairing of Emmalisa and Sarah Engelbrecht, Like Angels' third single following their December 2019 debut 'Rain' and 'Tunnel Vision' released this past winter, 'Lose It' features an R&B beat and channels the fierceness of Beyonce.
"'Lose It' is about 'dusting yourself off' and looking for ways to solve the issues you face instead of letting them defeat you," Like Angels says.
"It also expresses the importance of setting boundaries, instead of letting people take you down with their negativity."
Who is Like Angels… We are two crazy, fun-loving sisters (Emmalisa and Sarah) and singer-songwriters from Sydney pursuing our passion to write meaningful, real and honest songs that connect with people.
Even from a young age, growing up together, we've always been fascinated by the power of music and the impact lyric and melody can have upon a person. So the second we finished school, we began to pursue it.
We sound like… We actually received the nicest compliment from Nic Kelly (Project U) saying that our last single 'Tunnel Vision' sounded 'like Taylor Swift, Ben Folds, Missy Higgins and Jessie J all at once', so we're gonna go with that. :)
Our first gig was… In our lounge room at home for our family haha! We've done a lot of performing over the years, but our first professional gig together was at Carols In the Garden in 2017 at The Australian Botanical Gardens (Mount Annan) annual Christmas carols event.
We had so much fun performing and there were over 5,000 people in the audience, which was pretty cool.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision… It took us a little while to come up with our name, but once we did it just clicked and definitely was a unanimous decision.
Our last name is Engelbrecht, which comes from the border of France and Germany, and means 'angel of light'. We always wanted to choose a name that played on our surname.
Also, at every gig we played, someone would always say: "You girls sound like angels." One day, after hearing these kind words again, it just clicked and we realised the perfect name had been in front of us the whole time: Like Angels.
In the studio we usually… Bring snacks, eat snacks, swing on the swingy chairs, oh and work really, really hard with our producer Phil to create some awesome music!
If we could tour with anyone… Oh my gosh this is so hard! There are so many amazing artists out there we'd LOVE to tour with.
However in 2018, we did launch an Instagram campaign to support Taylor Swift on the Australian leg of her Reputation Stadium Tour; alas, she never responded. We're still hopeful for future Taylor tours, haha.
Social media is… A full-time job haha but we love it. It's such an awesome way to connect with people, spread some positivity and share our music.
My favourite app at the moment is… TikTok hahaha! There's so much amazing content on there.
We love how clever and creative you can get when making content, and have so much respect for a lot of the other creators on there. Some of our faves are Nat Alise, Joe Bartolozzi, Morgan Presley, and JoJo Siwa. We have so so many more.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time… There's probably so many moments, but we honestly can't think of any on the spot right now.
Life on the road can be… Pretty fun. We pump the music, do our vocal warm-ups and eat snacks. It's pretty cool getting to do this as sisters, because it means we've always got each other around. Can't wait to play some more gigs (hopefully soon).
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains… Honestly, we're pretty chill and don't really need much, but if we're gonna get specific, the following items would very much be appreciated: A giant bowl of dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets with tomato sauce, a giant Pusheen cat plush toy, and a pen full of puppy dogs.
The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was… When our gear crashed at a wedding gig, mid-song. We came out okay and still played through it of course, but it was definitely a very scary experience.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be your spokesperson? Someone who inspires us a lot – Ryan Tedder. It would be absolutely insane to think that such a talented person, writer, artist and creator would want to represent us.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? For our music probably America; either NY or LA, because the music scene is so strong over there. Otherwise, it would be pretty cool to live in Europe and be able to travel to so many countries since they are all so close to each other.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party? This is a very hard question because there are so many amazing people we'd love to sit down and have a conversation with. But if we have to answer, we'd say Harrison Ford, Meryl Streep (hint for the next single) and Taylor Swift.
They're all such amazing people in our industry and have worked so hard to get where they are. They would have so much experience and wisdom to share and of course plenty of amazing stories to tell.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Pizza with pineapple. Have we triggered anybody?
No matter the expense, send me a case of… Bilpin cider. It's so good.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was… This morning at 6am. The gym is our happy place. :)
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Vacuuming – enough said!
Do you have any phobias? It's not really a 'phobia', but can't say we're too keen on venomous snakes and spiders.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? If so, what type? Heck yes! This is a pretty cool question. We've actually even thought about creating our own show for our YouTube channel. Let's just say it would be very comical.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Firstly, this a great question.
Secondly, please see the following list of people we would like to prank if we could: Andy from Norway, Rinaldo from NY, Aaron & Jarrod from our gym here in Australia, and of course our producer, Phil.
There are many more names but if we listed them all, we'd be here all day. As to what we would do for the prank? We cannot say otherwise the prank would be spoilt haha!
Disclaimer: If you are on this list, we cannot confirm or deny whether we actually will or will not prank you. However, if we were to prank someone, congratulations, you've made the list.
