After releasing three singles in 2019 that featured female vocalists from their local scene in Sydney, today Forces & Fury have released their first song of 2020 – 'Nothing Feels Real At Dusk'.
Unlike their previous tunes, this track doesn't feature an external artist but is comprised of performances solely by the outfit's two members: Kat Ayala and Astrid Holz.Who is Forces & Fury... We are a production duo, a recording team, session musicians, a drummer, and a guitarist. We have been creating music together for many years, and have been writing as a duo for the last five.
We sound like... An ambient mix of trip-hop, rock and a dash of pop. Our latest release is a departure from our usual heavy rhythms and riffage. This track shows our softer side and love for synth.
Our first gig was? We have not played a gig as Forces & Fury. . . yet. We have, however, played countless gigs together for other outfits such as RACKETT and Hayley Mary. We would love to take Forces & Fury into the live music realm when the time is right.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision? We settled on the name in 2015, and it was pretty quick and painless decision. Forces was the name of a song we both adored, and Fury was brewing inside of us.
In the studio... We usually play with guitar tones, fiddle with samples and lose hours listening to different synths. We are lucky enough to have our own studio space that allows us to be creative and record whenever we have the urge.
If we could tour with anyone it would be? Radiohead or Death Cab For Cutie. We would never get tired of watching their set night after night.
Social media is... Now an integral part of everyone's lives, and has never been more important for musicians.
My favourite app at the moment is? Modacity. It's a free app that helps you organise your practice regime and reminds you to get on your instrument every day.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time? apl.de.ap from the Black Eyed Peas drank us under the table in the south of the Philippines. It's a long story.
Life on the road can be... the best time of your life, but also incredibly tiring. We love touring, but being away every weekend and working during the week is a tough slog.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Prosecco. We really love Prosecco.
The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in? There have been a few instances when we're about to play or playing shows and a piece of gear stops working. That's heart-stopping stuff.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band? We're going to go with comedian Yumi Nagashima because she's hilarious.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party? Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu – after dinner we can fight crime together.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? We're pretty good at roasts these days, lots of practice with all the lockdowns.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Delicious Japanese whiskey.
The last time we saw the inside of a gym... Was just before they closed due to C19. We try to stay fit, so we can move around on stage and still be able to walk the next day.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? We both hate changing the kitty litter.
Do you have any phobias... please explain? Astrid is terrified of spiders and Kat can't deal with cockroaches. Whenever there's a rogue insect in the house, the person with the least amount of fear of that species is the designated 'remover'.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? The only reality show we'd ever be involved in is 'Queer Eye', so that we can get full makeovers, our wardrobes can be redone and we can hang out with the fab 5.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? We have a great mate by the name of Josh. He runs an instagram page with photos of abandoned printers on the streets of Sydney. We have often thought about dropping printers we find on his door step. It's on the to-do list.
