Introducing Sydney Electronic, Indie Pop Producer-Songwriter Sturjun

Sturjun is an electronic producer, songwriter based in Sydney.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A producer, songwriter from Sydney, Sturjun's background includes working on film scores, television ads, as well as being a mixing engineer.

More than a year removed from his debut single 'China', Sturjun's sophomore song is titled 'Just A Friend' and features club-trap and electro-pop soundscapes merged with the enchanting vocals of indie folk singer Ebony Tait.

"I got in touch with Ebony because I thought the lyrics could use a raw performance from a talented country or folk artist rather than a traditional pop singer," Sturjun says.

"Ebony's vocals can be both so vulnerable and powerful. I think it really suited the dynamics and overall theme of the track."

'Just A Friend' was mixed by engineer Jack Prest (Sampa the Great, What So Not) and mastered by Ben Feggans (Mallrat, Hayden James).

Who is Sturjun... I'm a producer, songwriter based out of Sydney.

I sound like... Glass Animals, LDRU, Flume.

My first gig was... Busking on the streets at Tamworth Country Music Festival.

When did you settle on the group's name... I settled on Sturjun about three years ago after seeing a Sturgeon tarot card. I don't even know what tarot cards are about, but it just looked cool.

In the studio I usually... Procrastinate and drink a silly amount of coffee.

If I could tour with anyone... Tyler, the Creator; super-talented artist and I think there would be a lot of laughs.

Social media is... Good in moderation?

My favourite app at the moment is... Headspace. Killer meditation app.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... My maraca burst in my kindergarten performance at school assembly; the whole performance stopped, beads were flying everywhere and the whole school was laughing at me. I've been ridden with stage fright ever since. Damn I was vibing on those maracas tho...

Life on the road can be... I honestly don’t really know, but it looks like a lot of fun.

If you'll have me your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... I'm not fussy but some snacks are always nice.

The most scariest scenario I've found myself in, was... I fell from a bit of a cliff along a dried-out river into a very, very shallow pool of water. It wasn't crazy high and I landed completely flat, starfish in the water and came out unscathed. Definitely was one of those slow motion, life flash before my eyes kind of deals.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to your spokesperson... Anthony Mackie. The man is hilarious and just an all-round great, hardworking dude.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? LA for sure. A lot of people I know that have visited there weren't the biggest fans, but I would love to live there for a while.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Jack Black, Adam Sandler and Brie Larson. They all just seem like very funny, chill people.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Spag bol, always.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Big lover. Don't ever trust anyone who hates pets.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Miller Chill.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... This morning actually!

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Dishes for sure. You never realise how great a dishwasher is until you don't have one.

Do you have any phobias... Snakes. They're just gross and weird, and have killed a lot of past pets I've had. Why don't they have legs? How can they even move? It's just unnatural. Yucky.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Probably a 'Wipeout', 'Holey Moley' kind of thing if that counts as a reality show.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I used to be a big fan of the prank call as a teenager. My favourite one was calling two different people that you knew didn't get along, then merging the calls and muting yourself and just seeing how it unfolds. Classic.

Best local takeaway joint for a 2am feed that will leave you with a food coma? Randwick Food Hub, previously known as Randwick Curry and Kebab. Top-notch feed. Even better for people watching all the folks stumbling out of the Coach and Horses (a pub directly across the road).

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Feeling like a bit of a Micheal Scott lately, just generally acting like a big kid most of the time.

Last show you binge-watched? 'The Office'. Just started watching for the first time.
