An indie rock band from Perth, Spici Water have been treading with confidence local stages the past two-plus years.
The quartet of AJ, Amber, Fred and Kyle, Spici Water have released a string of singles since their debut song 'Drunk Texts' dropped in 2021. They've followed up with the likes of 'Tonight', 'Good Night' and 'Truth'.Spici Water have also garnered a stack of impressive support slots including Peach Fur, King Stingray, The Rions, Mom Jeans and Dear Sunday – all this year alone.
Produced by Sam Ford at Tone City Recording (Dice, Pond), Spici Water's newest release is the feel-good burner 'Country Vanns', a song about overcoming inner doubts related to self-worth and not stacking up to others.
"'Country Vanns' is about feeling as though you may be falling behind in life compared to others," AJ, the group's vocalist-rhythm guitarist says. "But also about being content with it, realising you are not behind but just on a different path and enjoying your time with friends who also do not follow the standard path in life."
The song was written while the band were enjoying the after-glow of tour life. "We wrote 'Country Vanns' right after our WA tour with The Vanns and we drew a lot of inspiration from them from this one," shares Kyle, the group's lead guitarist.
"We really wanted to have a feel-good track that would be the type of song we'd listen to on tour and decided to go with an extended guitar solo which you don't see that much anymore."
Here AJ shares some insights behind the music of Spici Water and why you'd best accept a dinner invitation from her!
Who is... Spici Water is an indie rock band from Perth, Western Australia. Their music is inspired by Australian artists such as Spacey Jane and Ball Park Music. With strong vocals, sweet riffs and a heavy bass solo, Spici Water's tunes will take you back local and rock ya UGG boots off!
We sound like... Spacey Jane, Ball Park Music and The Vanns.
Our first gig was... Badlands Bar (rip)!
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... I started the band in high school in 2018.
Before a lunchtime performance, I wanted to change the band name because the old one sucked, then my friends started making fun of me drinking sparkling water by calling it spicy water, so I changed the name to spici water thinking it'd be temporary till we found a better name and then it just kinda stuck!
In the studio I usually... Stress the heck out! I'm too much of a perfectionist.
If we could tour with anyone... Matt Corby. I look up to him so much as a vocalist.
Social media is... A great venting outlet, I love over-sharing on my Insta story.
My favourite app at the moment is... 'Township'. It's a game I like to play.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... Forgetting a whole verse in a song when we were playing a gig; I was so nervous.
Life on the road can be... So much fun. I love touring with the band, it brings us closer together. I adore these guys a lot.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... A cheese platter and a Spanish Tempranillo.
The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... Running out of drink tokens.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Taika Waititi, because I know he would do the funniest promo videos.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Athens, Greece because I love ancient history and to live there and explore the islands and see the temples every day would be a dream.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Amber, Kyle and Fred (the rest of the band) because they're my friends and I love them, but I also want to prove to them I can cook really good.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? I make the best steak and mash you'll ever have in your life.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Lover! I love my two doggos very much. At every party, you will find me in the corner petting the household pets instead of socialising.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Jelly cups.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... 2019.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Cleaning my room.
Do you have any phobias... I'm scared of the dark because I'm scared of ghosts.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? 'Big Brother'. I reckon I'd nail it.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I'd prank Kyle into thinking he broke his new guitar.
Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Uncle Billy's Chinese in Northbridge is my favourite for midnight treats, they don't close till 4am!
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Shaggy from Scooby Doo because I love subs; my dream is to get sponsored by Subway and get a subs for life card.
Last show you binge-watched? 'King Of The Hill'. It's one of my favourite adult cartoon series. I love how you can see the characters growth when they learn something new about the world and watch their perspective change; the storylines and character development is so wholesome to see and I also just love Bobby Hill and everything he says.
Spici Water join Angie Colman, King Blue and others playing the Hottest 100 Kick On Party at Indian Ocean Hotel (Perth) 27 January.
