Introducing Singer-Songwriter Thea FitzGerald

Thea FitzGerald is an indie soul-pop musician from Melbourne.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Melbourne soul-pop singer-songwriter, Thea FitzGerald returns with new music following her earlier 2022 EP 'Falling Forward'.

A regular live performer with her band, Thea turns her attention to celebrating the power of femininity on the single 'Woman'.

'Woman' is a strikingly fierce ode to the strength of womanhood in a modern world still grappling with the social status of equality for all and acceptance of the individual's right to identify however they choose to.

"Song bubba is here! So, so hope you enjoy 'Woman' and what prod wizard (and all-round legend) Stuart Le Brander and I did with it," shares Thea.

"Is a very special one pour moi, so excited for it to be yours toooo now!"

Currently in the middle of a Wednesday night October residency at The Gasometer Hotel, we get to know Thea a little better (both musically and her personality).

Who is Thea FitzGerald... I'm a Naarm/ Melbourne musician, singer-songwriter, and (semi) producer. My music is a random fusion of soul, pop, R&B and a bit of folk – I grew up on a diet of Paul Kelly, The Pretenders, Crowded House and Freddie Mercury, but then became super inspired by Frank Ocean, Stevie Wonder, Brandy and Ariana to name a few, so I guess I mesh of all of these influences. I am absolutely obsessed with vocal arrangements and harmonies.

I sound like... Ahh this is always impossible, but if I had to say it'd be kind of a mix of Wafia, Lykee Li, Honne, Kehlani and Emily King at the moment.

My first gig was... My first originals show was Grace Darling Hotel (my FAVOURITE Melbourne venue) when I launched my first EP.

When did you settle on your artistic name, and was it a unanimous decision... Mum and Dad did a good job of settling that one. ;)

In the studio I usually... Talk WAY too much about absolutely nothing! Probably to the detriment of everyone's productivity to be honest.

If I could tour with anyone... Mahalia, HONNE or Brasstracks.

Social media is... A challenge! So much access to so much cool stuff and people, but also a real battle being able to remember that the world social media depicts isn't reality.

My favourite app at the moment is... Voice notes – who knows where my random song ideas would go without it.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... Getting caught taking too many taste testers from the fancy nut store at the market via a very public ousting from the owner.

Life on the road can be... Unpredictable in the best way.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... Thick hot chips! Wedges and/ or potato gems also welcome.

The most scary scenario wI've found myself in, was... Driving straight into a bushfire on family road trip = terrifying.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be your spokesperson... Rihanna because she embodies everything about being a female BOSS.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Prague. It's like being in a real life Disney movie.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Donald Glover because he is just the most brilliant creative with a crazy cool mind. Meryl Streep because she is a queen and so so funny. Stevie Wonder a. for serenading purposes b. LIFE LESSONS.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Dahl and veg curry mmmmmmm. If you're lucky I'd make naan as well. ;)

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? LOVE ALWAYS! But preferably dogs.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Ermmm.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Mejdool dates. ;)

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Cleaning bathrooms.

Do you have any phobias... I absolutely have a phobia of being stuck inside a room with no fresh air or sunlight.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? I would vibe a 'Bake Off' series (would absolutely lose, but think it would make good content given how disastrous I am in the kitchen).

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Empress of China dumplings.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Donkey from 'Shrek' because I generally don't shut up.

Last show you binge-watched? Josh Thomas' 'Please Like Me' and 'Everything's Gonna Be Okay'. They both portrayed the realities of life in such a beautifully realistic but hilarious way, and Josh's caustic humour is just impeccable.
