Introducing Rock Band Is Man Kind

Is Man Kind are a three-piece rock band from Gold Coast.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A folk, alt and rock influenced three-piece from Gold Coast, the members of Is Man Kind have been playing music for years though this act only came together at the start of 2021.

Combining a sound that morphs the influences of The Doors, Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley, and Santana with a hint of Chris Isaak, last year the trio released two singles: 'Here She Comes' and '1984'.

Their newest release is 'The Impossible Dream'.

"Our answers are a little different and a little weird, but that's us," says the band, referring to the Q&A feature they did for us.

"Music for us is about providing a show, not just the noise, so everything we do is about giving people an experience to remember. We love you all, Is Man Kind."

Who is... We are Is Man Kind. We are a trio that hail from the wild Gold Coast music scene. We've all been playing music for years, however we only came together at the start of 2021.

Prior to this, our lead singer and music mentalist Mars Sahara, and his son, and drummer, The Doctor were a duo powerhouse. To add a bit of that sexy pizzazz from a keys player is Capt Jack.

We sound like... The Doors, Pink Floyd, an angry Santana, a touch of Chris Isaak and The Cult. It's sexy, eclectic, nostalgic rock.

Our first gig was... Very shaky and weirdly insightful (for us); the gig was at the staple, Vinnies Dive in Southport. Where most start.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... The name first game up for Mars about 22 years ago, however we first played under The Fool and Capt Jack played bass, which we worked out that it just wasn't a thing. So he went to keys and the Is Man Kind sound was born.

In the studio we usually... Mess around until Mars tells us to get our sh.t together. Yeah, Doc and Capt Jack get in trouble from Mars a lot. We don't go to the studio all that much as we want our performances to be organic and different every time. But in a good way.

If we could tour with anyone... Pink Floyd or Ben Harper! Or Hoodoo Gurus or The Baby Animals. What a wild ride would that be.

Social media is... A necessary evil, but also we love interacting with fans so it's cool, in doses.

My favourite app at the moment is... The Commbank app so we can see how much money we don't have.

To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... We have a habit of thinking famous people are people that they aren't. Sorry Jimeoin. You just look like Carl Barron.

Life on the road can be... Disgusting. Only because there is three very stinky men in a car together. But other than that it is one of the best experiences you could ever had. We can't wait for out tour in July!

If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Carlton Dry, a quarter bottle of scotch, a bottle of Zero Coke, a packet of bbq honey crisps, $37 of bitcoin and three donuts with a bite taken out of each one.

The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... In the car is a drunken drummer telling us that we're all very sexy men. . . It's even worse when he is Mars' son.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Ozzy Osborne. We would have picked Jim Morrison but unfortunately, he's currently unavailable for some time.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Cities are kinda gross. I think we'd all want to live in a massive farm. In Canada. But it's a big drive to Vinnies Dive for the next gig.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... George Ezra, Dave Gilmore, and Mike Paton.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Eggplant in brine but failing that we'd go a Thai green curry.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Love furry friends. Between us all we have four dogs, two cats and multiple other creatures, including Doc.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Aeroplane Jelly and a case of vodka (jelly shots, yewwwww!).

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... "Gym, press one if you need assistance?" / "Who is Gym? What's a gym?"

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Dishes. Ewww, washing. Making the bed. Anything that's a chore.

Do you have any phobias... Mars: Swimming in open water. Jack: snakes, they shouldn't be allowed to move with no legs. Doc: Dating in general haha.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? New reality show 'I'm Not A Celebrity, So Who Cares?'. Or the three of us on a real life 'Big Brother'.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Messing with Mars by playing his guitar without asking is always fun. His face always looks like he has sucked in a whole lemon with vinegar on it when he sees someone else playing it.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Maccas or any kebab place in the world.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Mars: Basil Fawlty or Dracula. Jack: Jack Sparrow's dad. Doc: Jack Sparrow.

Last show you binge-watched? Not a show but 'Jurassic Park Dominion'. Haters gonna hate, but it was awesome. Or 'The Orville'.
