Marshall Hamburger

Marshall Hamburger is an Australian retro pop-groove artist, pianist, and vocalist known for his vintage flair and magnetic stage presence.

Winner of 'Australian Idol' in 2025, Marshall rose to national prominence performing alongside Australia's top session musicians, cementing his place as one of the country's freshest musical voices.

After releasing two original singles last year, alongside performing a stack of live shows, Marshall's newest release is the single 'Brand New Man'; another piece of a forthcoming album he'll tease throughout 2026 ("expect to hear the words 'new release' often from me all throughout 2026!").

A song about the endless hope and unfiltered passion that accompanies freshly sprouted romance, 'Brand New Man' is the first ballad Marshall has ever written.

With the echoes or blissful laughter in the background, a powerfully cinematic piano pierces the soundscape, brimming with stirring, poignant tones, Marshall's velvety-husky voice preening: "Hold my hand for a minute / Let me stay in your eye's light / Lay your head on my shoulder."

Shimmering hi-hats level up the layers of epic as Marshall lets loose his vocal pipes, his unbridled vulnerability intoxicating as his words of worship and adoration flicker like candlelight.

A searing guitar lick only adds to the '80s yacht-rock flavour, and you just know somewhere Christopher Cross is feeling all warm and fuzzy.

It's as if Hamburger has captured the essence of love in its sonic form. "'Brand New Man' is a pop-rock ballad written about the grandeur of love found in the smallest, most intimate moments. A soundtrack to the beginning of forever.

"Inspired by the musical sensibilities of Benson Boone, Bruno Mars and Bruce Hornsby, I wanted the song to have an explosive chorus while maintaining a sense of vulnerability throughout the verse and pre-chorus," adds Marshall.

"To achieve this I kept the arrangement to piano, guitar, and vocals, only bringing in the kick and hi-hats during the pre-chorus.

"From there it was easy to make the chorus explode: just add some distorted guitars, a bass, and a snare, and you achieve that satisfying jump from pre-chorus to chorus!"

Who is Marshall Hamburger... I sound like if Silk Sonic and Michael McDonald had a baby with The 1975! I love old retro music and high-production pop, so I like to bring those two styles together while remaining tasteful and true to each style.

My first gig was... A 60th birthday party with my dad and a friend of his on saxophone. I ended up singing some jazz at that gig, haha, I was very nervous.

I stood to the side singing half the songs while shaking an egg shaker, it was awesome ദ്ദി(˵⎚ᴗ⎚ ˵ ) ✧.

In the studio... I usually spend HOURS on the little details. I listen to the same section about 100 times until I'm happy with it.

Especially vocals, I often return to the home studio after a couple of days and redo any vocals I'm not happy with, and I'll continue that until I have a deadline to meet.

If I could tour with anyone... It would have to be Benson Boone. I don't care what the haters say, I love his music! I think he's an incredible performer and vocalist.

His music is the reason I started talking to my girlfriend! We were talking about how 'Mystical Magical' was underrated, haha.

Social media is... Time-consuming! I find it very fun to edit together a creative idea or film something and just dump it onto social media, but holy moly, it takes up so much of my time! Sometimes I have to set aside whole days for it and save production for another day 😓.

My favourite app at the moment... Is Block Blast! It's actually my go-to mobile game when I'm on a plane or somewhere without wi-fi. That and Subway Surfers, they're both very wonderful time wasters, and I like seeing big numbers go up, very satisfying.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was... When I met Ronan Keating, but didn't quite realise who he was until he was onstage 😓.

Life on the road... Often makes me very homesick; as an introvert who stays in his room most of the time, I'm a real homebody! That being said I do love hotels, although most of the time I'll be staying in that room too.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that our rider contains... Water! I am a water-guzzling machine, especially when singing; I tend to gulp it down rather than sip it.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... If Tom Holland reached out to me saying he loved my music I think I would faint.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? I would have to choose LA, because I wanna see what all the fuss is about! I wanna see the hustle and bustle of the entertainment capital. Though I'm not sure I'd go to many parties, I think I'd just retreat to the studio.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Would be Ed Sheeran, Charlie Puth, and Jacob Collier.

Because I'd love to pick their music and business brains apart. I think they're all highly intelligent people! Plus it would be such an interesting group of people; I wonder what would happen.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? I would probably cook something with bread. If I were a Sim, my list of recipes would be French toast, grilled cheese, eggs on toast, and pizza.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? If anyone hates pets I wouldn't trust them.

I absolutely love dogs, cats, ducks, chickens, fish, and EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN! I am lucky enough that my sisters are also fans of those animals, so we have all of those animals in our house.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... I think sometime last year? I definitely kept that membership longer than I should have.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Definitely lifting heavy things.

It's not satisfying like cleaning or taking the rubbish out, it's just lifting and taking a breather at the end, (probably doesn't help that the last time I saw the inside of a gym was last year 😓).

Do you have any phobias... SPIDERS! I don't know specifically why, but I have hated spiders for as long as I've been alive. I freak out even if a little one is on me.

One memory I have from when I was little: we were living in our front shed while Dad was renovating the house, and we had a porta-loo outside to use as a toilet.

Above the sliding door to get out of the shed was a MASSIVE TARANTULA (or something that looked like one). It took me about 20 minutes to gather up the courage to run past it, but when I ran I *really* ran; I think I thought it would jump down and bite me.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Well I did! I was very lucky and won the 2025 season of 'Australian Idol'! It was a total blur and I sometimes forget what a crazy achievement it is.

If I had to go on another show however, it would have to be a show themed around pop-culture. I actually sent a tape to try and audition for a 'Fallout' reality TV show; I am a MASSIVE fan of the 'Fallout' games, so I sent a tape in. Let's see what happens.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Hungry Jacks! I think it's the best fast food spot in Australia. That or Domino's; they're both my unhealthy comfort food of choice.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? I think Jeremy or Michael from 'Be More Chill'.

I actually played Jeremy Heere in MIC's 2021 production of the show. I've been in love with that musical ever since.

Last show you binge-watched? My girlfriend has recently gotten me into 'Glee' and I just love it. Something about the cheesy storylines and honestly awesome vocal performances has me entranced in a way I don't 100 per cent understand, but I'm here for it.
