When Melbourne's lockdowns forced Sharl home like the rest of us, it allowed her the time to recapture her creative past (when she was signed to a UK indie records label).
The extra space and energy the singer-songwriter had to focus on her songwriting was turned into an outlet for her own self-reflection about her music career as well as documenting personal moments experiencing the dating game. Now Sharl has collected ten songs – from classic pop ballads and vintage disco beats to stylised modern hyperpop – on her album 'City Lights'.
"I started writing the songs for this album when I had so much time and mental space for introspection during the lockdowns in Melbourne," Sharl says.
"In a way it was therapeutic, just doing what I enjoy most at home. There's a diverse range of stories and sounds on the album, which I feel is symbolic of myself as a person and artist in that I'm always evolving in my thoughts and style.
"Through writing it, I realised I had found my true voice as an artist and am inspired with an ongoing creative vision that I want to share with the world."
Who is Sharl... I'm a pop artist who has been away from music for way too long! I finally got my act together during Melbourne lockdowns, finding my creative stride again and now I'm here to stay.
I write songs that capture snapshots of feelings and moments in life, exploring deep and candid thoughts. Although I describe my music as pop, it's pretty diverse in terms of sub-genres and I'm very openminded to different sounds, so I'm looking forward to the journey ahead of continually evolving as an artist.
I sound like... Whatever I feel like at the time. You'll get an idea of what I mean by listening to the range of tracks on 'City Lights'.
My first gig was... In the middle of a shopping centre in the UK.
When did you settle on your artistic name, and was it a unanimous decision... Last year, and being a solo artist, it was easily unanimous.
In the studio I usually... Get in the zone and sing my heart out.
If I could tour with anyone... Beyonce.
Social media is... What we love to hate, but also just love.
My favourite app at the moment is... My calendar, so I don't have to remember where I need to be at a given time, but I also get really excited looking ahead to all the fun things planned.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... I first attempted filming a music video, glad to have repressed most of those memories and moved on to better things now.
Life on the road can be... I haven't toured yet so please invite me along and I'll report back!
If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... No brown M&Ms.
The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Being lost alone in the French countryside in the dark and with a dead phone battery; eventually I got rescued by a policeman.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be your spokesperson... Without a doubt, Mulalo – to make sure no one's hating on me!
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? London, for more 'City Lights' adventures.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Lewis Hamilton for sure, but then I couldn't resist the temptation to also invite Alonso and Rosberg to watch the drama unfold.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Brunch – the best meal of the day.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Lover of course.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Gelato. In fact make that multiple cases of all the flavours please.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Intense (gotta compensate for that gelato).
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Admin work, it always seems to multiply.
Do you have any phobias... That my whole recording session is unusable due to clipping (I have PTSD from this situation too!).
Would you ever partake in a reality show? The type where it's supposed to be a laid-back, unscripted show following a group of friends but is actually neither one of those things.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? One of several lovely friends: I'd record the worst screamo cover possible, ask them for feedback on my important new creative direction and watch as they try their hardest to give the most tactful, encouraging comments.
Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Whichever pizzeria has the quickest delivery time on Uber Eats.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Hannah Montana, because I get the best of both worlds.
Last show you binge-watched? 'Selling Sunset' for the clothes, houses and general spectacle. . . And finding out that my song 'I Fell In Love' won Best Song in the LA Film Awards in the same round as G Flip feat. Chrishell Stause is my current claim to fame.
