Introducing Perth Indie Punks Sixth Avenue

Sixth Avenue are a punk-rock band from Perth.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Based in the northern suburbs of Perth, Joel, Kenji, Sam and Daniel are indie punk group Sixth Avenue.

Earlier this year they released their debut EP 'So Temperamental', alongside support gigs with the likes of Scream Mountain and Pot Plant House Party. They've since headlined shows at Indian Ocean Hotel and Amplifier Bar.

Sixth Avenue's newest release is the single 'Lost', lifted from a forthcoming EP. It'll be available from Friday (3 December).

We sound like... Think Australian indie rock meets midwest emo. Influences include Slowly Slowly, Violent Soho, Sly Withers.

Our first gig was... An afternoon show at Mojos Bar in Freo. I mean, technically we'd played for people before at our high school graduation and stuff, but first proper show was at Mojos at start of 2020, a venue which we still love to play whenever we get the chance.

When did you settle on the group’s name... The name is based off a song titled '6th Avenue Heartache' by The Wallflowers; that band with Jakob Dylan in it. We were throwing around ideas early on and it kinda stuck.

In the studio we usually... Try every idea possible just to see what happens. We find it easier to go wild first and then tone sh.t down rather than the other way round. Also, have to mention all the Nando's and ramen that gets consumed; starts to get a real good smell going on in there.

If we could tour with anyone... We'd have to go with Red Hot Chili Peppers. Man they'd go insane.

Social media is... Ruining our minds.

Our favourite app at the moment... Has gotta be Depop. Can find some serious cheap gems there.

To date our most embarrassing moment was the time... We've done a heap of drunken covers and fallen on stage too many times. Ouch.

Life on the road is... Hard to say as we haven't done much touring, but super fun. Although car rides can get rough sitting around gear cases for hours.

If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that the rider contains... Not ones to ask for the yellow skittles or anything bonkers, so just some bottled water for on stage; does get hot there sometimes.

Most scary scenario we found ourselves in... Was probably when Dan's car fully decided to break down at the rehearsal studio we were at with no other way of getting back. More funny than scary looking back actually.

What celebrity/famous person would be the spokesperson of the band... Zach Galifianakis.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Tokyo would be sick. Kenji's been there a bunch and could show us around.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us? Pasta. Obviously.

When it comes to pets, are you a lover or a hater of our furry friends? Lover, of course. Lewis (Sam's doggo) is the fifth and definitely the coolest member of our band.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Single Fin.

Last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Few days ago. Most of us are disgraceful with that; Sam's the best out of all of us by far. . . suppose he's gotta keep in shape to play drums how he does.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Being the one to pick up the takeaway is never fun.

Do you have any phobias? Broken sticks and snapped strings mid-set are scary.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Probably not. However could already be in one right now and completely unaware of it.

If you could prank any of your friends, who’s your target and how are you bringing them down? Dan tends to rock up real late for rehearsal, so we'd probably just intentionally show up after him to see him spin out. We love you Dan.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you in a food coma? Kebab joints all the way.

What fictional character best describes your personality? We laugh about this a bunch actually; Trent Lane from 'Daria' is literally our guitarist, Kenji. Spitting image.

Last show you binge watched? 'The Sopranos'. Tony Soprano is the biggest badass in TV for sure.

Sixth Avenue play YMCA HQ (Perth, all-ages) 5 December and Four5Nine (Perth) 10 December.
