Dunedin punk rockers, Hot Donnas have recently released their newest EP, 'The Adventures of E-WAN', featuring current single 'Two Brains', which eerily sounds like Nirvana throughout.
"I wrote the hook for 'Two Brains' in my head at the end of a big night of foolishness, when I found myself facing a decision of what to do next," Hot Donnas' Jacob King says."The ultimate suggestion throughout the song being that whichever choice I make throughout my life, I will face the nagging pressure from both good and bad influences; and forever be lost bouncing between the consequences of my judgement."
Other highlights of 'The Adventures of E-WAN' include 'Tube Socks', 'Miss Season' and 'Type A'.
Who are Hot Donnas... We're four blokes who need a good kick up the arse. Poorly behaved and need to practice more. Although we have a smashing attitude for rock music and want to see this through to the bitter end.
We sound like... Maybe a combination of some Foo Fighters/ Nirvana/ Arctic Monkeys/ RATM; except not quite as prestigious. We like punchy and impactful live rock shows and our music/ sound has morphed over the years to allow for this.
Our first gig was... At a flat party by Leith River in Dunedin, although Gene wasn't there that time.
Our first full band gig was a mates dad's 50th in Wanaka; we somehow got given a brand new Mercedes van to drive over. It was a very interesting start to what would become a very interesting couple of years of gigs and nonsense.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision? This was the classic case of coming up with a silly name, and having it stick like glue.
Hot Donnas was created from a classic 'That '70s Show' episode with Jake and his flatmates at the time, and once it was brought to the table we really didn't have any other names challenge it. Hot Donnas was unanimously a perfect fit.
In the studio we... Try and get as much recording done and be as productive as we can be. We're all pretty poor, so the time in the studio is extremely valuable.
If we could tour with anyone... It would be the Darrans. We all made a promise to them that after our first Aussie tour with them, we would come back and do it all over again. Between the two bands we get to cause some serious eardrum damage and that is what we strive for. The more obnoxious the rock music, the better.
Social media is... Something that we share our antics on. @juicyhotdonnas
My favourite app at the moment is... Probably would have to be Reddit. It's got everything you need on there from entertainment to news to interesting facts.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... We got kicked out of our own gig. Was actually an interesting story that we may never share with the media, simply due to the nonsense arguments that we had to hear from the venue and arrogant behaviour from them.
We object pretty sternly to being bullied in that manner by a venue or promoter, so we quite happily turned that gig into a nightmare for them. Lesson learned I guess. No pissing on the grass apparently.
Life on the road can be... Hazardous and adventurous. We never know what we are going to get up to while touring as we can hardly plan our day out properly let alone a tour.
We never know what to expect when all four of us get together in a foreign city, as unexpected occurrences tend to happen whether it is missing flights to being stranded on the road – can never guarantee that we will get to our destination smoothly, but can always rely on us to make it to the gig.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... We are very easily pleased – a bottle of gin and juice is all you need.
The scariest scenario we've found ourselves in... Missing our flights during our first NZ tour – set the bank accounts well dry.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Chabuddy G. Not all heroes wear capes.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Not many cities I would want to be living right now with the current circumstances, but I've heard that Tokyo is nice this time of year. Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Chabbudy G, MC Grindah, and Daryl Tuffey. If you haven't seen the Netflix show 'People Just Do Nothing' that will explain the first two.
Daryl Tuffey was an NZ cricketer who arguably bowled the worst over in cricket history after a huge night on the bend – someone we'd love to have a beer with.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Gene would cook up a mean feed of curry. He has a passion for spice.
No matter the expense send me a case... Of ice, cold beer.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym... Was yesterday.
What's the one chore you dislike the most... Doing the dishes, thank god for dishwashers.
Do you have any phobias... We are actually pretty open to pretty much anything. There hasn't been an experience yet where we have come across a phobia in the band, so I guess that is yet to rear its head.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? Easily 'People Just Do Nothing'. The best reality television ever made.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Gene (bass player), and with a simple straight-run tackle through the mid-section.
