The trio of Izzy, Kerry and Libby aka Pink Matter have been crafting danceable indie pop, neo-soul-jazz gems for a number of years.
From Brisbane, Pink Matter drawn influence and a fierce power from all-girl groups from the last half century or so: think The Supremes right through to Destiny's Child, Spice Girls, TLC, and HAIM.Since releasing their debut EP 'Human Error' in 2018 (where they worked with Grammy-nominated engineer/ producer Nick Herrera), the trio have earned support slots for Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Harvey Sutherland and The Internet, while playing some of the biggest festivals in Oz: Laneway and Splendour In The Grass.
Their current single is 2020 track 'You'll Never Know', which earned them nomination as a finalist for Queensland Music Awards' electronic / dance category.
"What an honour to be a finalist for this year's QMAs alongside these INCREDIBLE artists: Confidence Man, Young Franco and Lastlings. Biggest thank you to our favourite Harvey Sutherland; it's been so special working with you and watching our track grow."
Ahead of their appearance at the inaugural Sunshine Sounds Festival (on the Sunshine Coast) next month, Izzy, Kerry and Libby sit-down for a quick Q&A that includes some fun (non-music) questions.
Who is Pink Matter... We are a three-piece female band from Brisbane.
We sound like... Something you would listen to on the dance floor, but also in the kitchen when you want to have little dance.
Our first gig was... In West End (Brisbane) at LocknLoad, the smallest bar you have ever been in. It no longer exists :(
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... We are all fans of Frank Ocean and it just kind of happened when Kerry thought of the idea – we all said yes straight away.
In the studio we usually... Spend too much time laughing, share songs we are liking or bring memes.
If we could tour with anyone... Jungle and Kaytranada are our two dream tours.
Social media is... A curse.
My favourite app at the moment... Is TikTok.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... When Kerry tried to do a magic trick on stage.
Life on the road can be... Exhausting, but the funniest moments happen when you are running on three hours of sleep.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider... Contains hummus, crackers, tea and chocolate.
The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... When we were staying in an Airbnb that required us to get the band van into a car lift.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band? Casey Frey because he would dance the questions away.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose? Probably London or San Francisco because they sound so exotic and far away.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party? We would happily host the Haim sisters.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? We would order banh mi from Cafe O Mai; they are the best in Brisbane.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Absolute LOVERS.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Pink Matter wine from Alphabet and Dice from Adelaide.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... We don't gym inside – we run outside and watch the sun set.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Carrying gear. F... that.
Do you have any phobias? Cane toads - Izz; heights - Kerry; annoying people - Libby.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? Yes. 'The Amazing Race' would be so much fun. Just like touring but not.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? We're not really pranksters; we'll leave that to Scotty and the Ninjas ;)
Best local takeaway joint for a 2am feed that will leave you with a food coma? Lord Of The Fries.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? We come as a trio so therefore Libby is Blossom, Kerry is Bubbles and Izzy is Buttercup.
Last show you binge-watched? Strong unanimous votes for 'Cheer'.
Pink Matter join the likes of Kate Miller-Heidke, Busby Marou, Miiesha, Katie Noonan, Asha Jefferies, Jack Carty, Sahara Beck and more at the inaugural Sunshine Sounds Festival at Eumundi Showgrounds (Sunshine Coast) 1-2 May (Labour Day weekend).
