Introducing Multi-Instrumentalist Rock Solo Artist Harro

Harro is an indie rock artist from Western Australia.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

After performing in a number of cover bands across the years while learning a diverse range of musical instruments, Western Australian rock artist Harro found the confidence to record his own original material.

A FIFO worker from Bullsbrook in the Swan Valley (north of Perth), last month Harro released 'One Word Says A Lot', an eight-track debut record he describes as "a concept album of sorts".

Lead single 'Success' is a proper pub-rock song with "a bit of an orchestral twist" designed to inspire the world to reach for their goals even if it means taking two steps forward, one step back to get where we really want to be.

"I'm a multi instrumentalist who loves his rock music and wants to keep the genre alive," Harro says.

"After many years in the original and cover music scene, I finally decided to use my songwriting and mixing skills to produce my first solo album."

I sound like... Me really, but I've had various comparisons, some of which are David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Muse and Alice Cooper. Mix all that together and see what you get.

My first gig was... At a Red Faces-type talent quest at the Exchange Hotel in Kalgoorlie. I was playing keyboards and we performed an original song called 'Big Sulphur Cloud'.

When did you settle on your artistic name, and was it a unanimous decision... My name is simply my mining nickname derived from my surname, which is Harris.

In the studio I usually... In my studio at home I usually start with a basic idea on keyboard or bass or guitar, add extra chords to that idea and build around that base until a song is formed. Lyrics are mostly written before all this happens.

If I could tour with anyone... Current it would be Muse. I've seen them a few times and they are brilliant performers and the ultimate stadium rock band.

Social media is... Useful for staying in touch with those that you want to, and a necessary evil as far as promoting yourself goes. It can make people a bit mindless in some ways.

My favourite app at the moment is... Well not being a huge app user, I would have to say Prime Video as it helps pass some time while away at work, being a FIFO worker.

To date my most embarrassing moment was... Doing naked karaoke at the Big Day Out.

Life on the road can be... I haven't ever toured on the road so hope to be able to answer this question soon.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that my rider contains... A few cans of Jacks and cola for after the show.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in was... After a pub gig. It was a bikie-owned pub and I was in the office trying to collect our payment. Some scary dude was outside the window screaming at the manager inside then smashed the window, which luckily had bars on it. I got my money quick, then we all ran!

What famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... For me would have to be Dave Grohl. I'm a fan of his music and his attitude to life and music also.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? I'm happy where I am, but if I had to choose I guess Copenhagen, just cos Denmark sounds like a peaceful place.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Dave Grohl, Matt Bellamy and Jimmy Barnes, just to chat music over the different eras and cos they seem like cool people.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Hahaha, spaghetti bolognese or green chicken curry if you dare.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? I'm an animal lover; we have a lot of nature on our bush block including some fairly tame kangaroos.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Too long ago.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Chores are called that cos nobody likes them, hard to pick one. When you work away and live in a camp, doing your washing after a 12-hour day is the biggest pain in the ass!

Do you have any phobias... Can't say I have any really.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? I'm not a fan of reality shows. If you put a camera in front of anyone they start acting, so it's never totally real. They also tend to over-blow the so called dramas that occur. It's all about marketing, not reality.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? My gorgeous girlfriend will be the first one pranked, but if I say what it is then she'll know so I can't!

Best local takeaway joint for a 2am feed that will leave you with a food coma? I'm not often out and about at that hour, but if I am it's usually a kebab shop that's best.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Hmmmm, difficult one this, I like to think I'm unique so I'll rain check this one for now.

Last show you binge-watched? I don't watch a huge amount of TV, but I do watch a lot of 'Forensic Files' as it's interesting and the narrator's voice helps me to sleep, hahaha!
