Three best mates who formed during high school, Melbourne trio The Grogans continue to explore '60s and '70s surf-rock sounds with their second studio album 'Day / To / Day'.
"We wanted to build off of our last album and EPs, writing songs that we enjoy playing and listening to," the band says."It's got a bit more of a '60s surf sound than our last releases; we just like that era – the style, the sound of the time, the cars.
"We also tried to have less limits, to show our wide variety and bigger picture of what The Grogans are, who we collectively are as people."
'Day / To / Day' was recorded at Grogans HQ out in Ocean Grove, providing a relaxed setting for The Grogans to settle into as they spent their time making music, skating and hanging out, which made the album process a far easier an experience.
"[The recording process] was same as what we usually do; a couple of months writing, then we take a week off and lock ourselves away to get the majority of the recording done, then polish it up with added tracks at Grogs HQ.
"This time was in Ocean Grove, which was really relaxing. We'd surf, skate and just hang out without too much structure to the recording."
Who are The Grogans... Three best mates who met playing music in high school. Started playing house parties and it sort of stemmed from there.
We sound like... Can't really decide who we sound like, but we definitely do take influence from '60s surf rock through to heavier punk sounding stuff from nowadays. We love the idea of creating a new age of surf rock inspired by that nostalgic sh.t (music/ cars) from the '60s/ '70s.
Our first gig was... One of our good mates and cousin's 18th was setup on the porch of his house. It actually then became the video clip for our first song, 'Sick Kids'.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision… Sitting on my bed after band practice one day and we just thought: 'Should we come up with a name?', and Gus said: 'Yeah, The Grogans." We thought it was a bit sh.t but we went with it anyway, later to find out that it actually means a big, old, piece of sh.t.
In the studio we usually... Spend a lot of the time putting the bones of the tracks down; by the time it gets to the end of the day, we've normally had a couple of beers so group vox start getting laid down and can't really remember much from there.
If we could tour with anyone... Probably be Rolling Stones and AC/DC, and Missy Higgins; definitely Missy Higgins!
Social media is... @thegrogansband - IG and FB.
My favourite app at the moment is... Apps are scary, but if I'd have to choose one, it would be Gumtree. Love finding a bargain.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... Ahhh, when we first started gigging during high school, we used to get really nervous before gigs and occasionally throw up. The gigs were only to like 100 people at Ding Dong Lounge, but we would get nervous as.
Life on the road can be... A headache in the morning and not much sleep at night.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Slab of Melbourne's, Caramello Koalas and some veggie jerky.
The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... We were driving to Mildura; Jordy was driving and hit a couple of birds, and it was very distressing, scary, scarring and all of the negative words that come to mind when you hit a bird.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Bon Scott, because why not.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Somewhere in NZ. Chilled over there. Good surf, everyone's nice – an alright music scene over there, too.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Bon Scott, Jimi Hendrix and Ghandi, so Bon Scott can recruit Jimi Hendrix and Ghandi as spokespersons of The Grogans.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Full, fresh pasta... YUM!
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Grogs Grog!
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Ahh, a gym. We've got a little prison gym in our shed that consists of car batteries and kegs as well as an esky for the bench press.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Mopping is SH.T! Mopping sucks.
Do you have any phobias... Either sleeping naked because of creepy crawlies or clicking your toes together – I know Gus hates that.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? Ah yeah, guess we'd have to see what pops up.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Scaring Angus; you can do anything and he freaks out. So just making a scare compilation of him would be the dream.
