The pairing of Matthew Wright (The Getaway Plan frontman) and Samuel K Sproull (Japanese Wallpaper, Montgomery engineer), Harves follow up their debut single 'Do Your Worst' (which features in 2020 movie 'After We Collided') with another spellbinding charmer in the form of 'The River'.
Poignant indie pop awash with a moody, bruised electronic soundscape and Matthew's heartfelt vocals that produce the good type of chills, 'The River' showcases Harves immense talent as well as a bright future."After realising we were gonna be stuck inside for a while, we committed ourselves to using the time to sort out a workflow that meant we could finish a bunch of new material that was hovering about," Harves says.
"It's been nice to develop some focus around these songs and get them finished instead of constantly throwing paint at the canvas."
Who is Harves... We're a music making duo from Melbourne. We've worked on different projects for a number of years and finally came together to focus on creating sad tracks that make us happy.
We sound like... Trip hop Hans Zimmer with a bit of a video game addiction.
Our first gig was... A video that we filmed during lockdown. So far that's it.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision… We kept a document in the Dropbox with names that reached around 200 options; Harves ended up being the one we both hated the least.
In the studio we usually... We're sort of a combination of a band and a production duo, so we are typically discussing video games while making our own music or producing other artists and trying to act professional.
If we could tour with anyone... Any project featuring Thom Yorke or Bjork would be a lottery win for us.
Social media is... Where my Mum follows what I've been up to.
My favourite app at the moment is... Spotify and Apple Music for Artists apps, so I can feed myself with dopamine every time we get a new play.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... My girlfriend moved into the house we shared while Matt was on tour with his old band and I didn't communicate that is what was actually happening. Ha!
Life on the road can be... We haven't toured as Harves yet, but we've definitely been on the road a lot together and separately in other projects.
It's a bit less exciting these days as we try to be responsible adults (whatever that means). Maybe a beer or two during the show and then it's peppermint tea and YouTube at the hotel.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Socks, water, phone chargers and ear plugs please. A vegan parma is always appreciated too.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band? Jacinda Ardern, she rocks. The way she can handle a crisis is second to none and I feel like I'm just micromanaging one big, life crisis at all times. It would be great to get some help with that.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Kyoto, the most beautiful place in the world. Incredible scenery, the best ramen. It's inspiring af.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... My parents and sister, because they live in NZ and lockdown has prevented me from seeing them this year.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Saag Paneer. Once I unlocked this one there's been no going back.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Amarula.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Later today, when I go sign up again.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Cleaning the cat litter tray; or to be more specific, around the cat litter tray because the little sh.ts have a 70 per cent hit rate.
Do you have any phobias? I used to have Emetophobia – a fear of vomiting or seeing people vomit. I've got over it these days, but it made partying pretty difficult for a long time.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? Would really love to be a contestant on 'The Block' tbh. My girlfriend has an amazing eye and I reckon we'd win.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I prank my cats every day.
