While he is only 19, Melbourne DJ-producer Kavorka (yes, it is a Seinfeld reference and that's damn-fine with us) has already entrenched himself in the Melbourne Bounce scene.
From playing half-a-dozen gigs weekly (pre-COVID) and releasing three of his own originals, Kavorka is pursuing his own style while being influenced by the likes of Will Sparks, Timmy Trumpet and Reece Low.His current original production, 'Your Heart', reached #8 in the Beatport Big Room Charts.
Who is Kavorka? I'm a 19-year-old DJ, producer from Melbourne, Australia. I started as a bedroom DJ like anyone else, and have been producing dance music since I was 14 years old. I love making music that people will enjoy and dance to, and the adrenaline it gives me on stage is out of this world.
I sound like... The genre I produce and play on tour is Melbourne Bounce. The Melbourne Sound is a strong influence on me because I'm Melburnian, and I love the music of this city.
I would describe Melbourne Bounce like an electro house/ minimal style sound with bouncy off-beat basses and whiny saw/ vocal leads. The sound was at its peak around 2012 when Will Sparks and Joel Fletcher were making radio hits like 'Ah Yeah' and 'Swing', but I've noticed it's becoming popular again.
My first gig was... At Cloud Nine on King St when I turned 18 years old. I reached out to the owners on Facebook and they were willing to give me an hour set on my birthday, which was amazing.
When did you settle on your artist name? I remember I was trying to come up with a DJ name in my room when I was 16 and nothing would come to mind that I liked. I turned on the TV and found the name in a '90s show called 'Seinfeld'. Ever since, it's been a high school nickname and now it's who I am. I love it.
In the studio I usually... When it comes to writing music and bouncy drops, I tend to produce in the late arvo or night because I can't focus in the mornings. I was never a morning person, and I usually stay up every night past 2am writing tracks on my laptop.
When I come into the studio I already have an idea in mind of what I want to make. Sometimes I voice record a melody on my phone or even a vocal lead, so my ideas never go to waste.
In the studio my phone's turned off so I'm disconnected with the world, and it’s just me and my laptop. I produce for about two, three hours at a time and then take a break, maybe even go for a walk or a drive. This is good for your mental health and also good to come back in the studio later with fresh ears.
If I could tour with anyone... I would love to tour overseas, I've seen online that people in Europe LOVE the Melbourne Sound and I can't wait to tour there in 2021. I would love to tour with some older Melbourne Bounce kings or even Timmy Trumpet one day.
Social media is... I try to post as much as I can on all social medias, but I'm mostly on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Soundcloud. You can find me by searching @kavorka.
My favourite app at the moment is... I'm loving TikTok at the moment. So many funny people on there and entertaining videos.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... When I was on tour and slipped on stage. I think there was water on the ground, but OMG so embarrassing!
Life on the road can be... Touring is always tough, you're always on the go and you lose a lot of sleep. I guess I'm used to the lifestyle now and I'm young, so I'm always keen to party. I try to bring my mates to my shows which always makes me feel at home. Other than that, you just have to push through the hard days and remember why you're doing this and how far you’ve come.
If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... I don't have a big rider but I do love a few vodka Red Bulls.
The scariest scenario I've found myself in, was... Halfway through one of my shows my headphones blew and I couldn't hear the mixing. I was freaking out at the start, but my mate had iPhone headphones and gave them to me. Embarrassing and scary.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be your spokesperson? I love David Dobrik's content on YouTube, I think he’s a pretty funny guy. Would love him to be a spokesperson.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party? Kevin Hart, Adam Sandler and Sacha Baron Cohen; what a dinner that would be.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? My dad loves cooking and has taught me how to make the best pizzas. Come over for dinner and you'll be left in a food coma.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Send me a case of red liquorice and caramel frape.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Because of COVId-19, probably almost a year. Terrible to say but I always try and stay active when I can.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? I hate making my bed. Sorry mum.
Do you have any phobias... please explain? My biggest phobias would be spiders and water tunnels, I can't stand them!
Would you ever partake in a reality show? I was thinking about applying for Big Brother 2021, it looks fun. Who knows, maybe I will.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I would love to prank one of my mates with a fake lottery ticket. I might put it in one of my YouTube vlogs. Can't wait to see their reaction.
