Introducing Melbourne Alternative Rockers Future Static

Future Static are a progressive, alternative band from Melbourne.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A five-piece band from Melbourne sourcing an exhilarating synthesis of alternative, melodic and progressive styles, next weekend Future Static will take to the main stage at UNIFY Forever in regional Victoria.

As winners of the triple j Unearthed comp to play UNIFY Forever, Future Static will be playing alongside the likes of The Amity Affliction, Violent Soho, Slowly Slowly, Trophy Eyes and so many more.

"We are so grateful to have won the triple j Unearthed slot at Unify Gathering this year! Make sure you're up early to catch us at 10:40am on the Saturday, you won't want to miss this!"

Lead vocalist Amariah 'Ami' Cook sits down for a chat about all manner of things including living in Barcelona, filling drum kits with beans, teasing us with a Korean bbq, and a binge-show tip, 'Inventing Anna'.

Who is Future Static... We are a five-piece alternative heavy band from Melbourne, earning our name as stage staunchers after the past year of consistent local shows and our first ever festival.

We sound like... Paramore, bro. No, but in all seriousness, our new sound is heavily influenced by BMTH ('There Is A Hell' era), Make Them Suffer, Saosin and Dreamstate, maybe even a little While She Sleeps.

Our first gig was... Wrangler Studios with Oceans To Athena and Bridge The Border.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... It was a few weeks before the name Future Static was decided. We went through a tonne of different options. Ryan's frontrunner was Malibu Radley, which he will save for a different project.

Future Static is great because it doesn't pigeonhole us into any one genre, like say 'throw the ordained minister to the pigs' or whatever.

In the studio we usually... Make music and love every second of it. Studio time is expensive and invaluable, so we don't like to goof off in the most important part of the creative process.

If we could tour with anyone... We would tour with Bring Me The Horizon, Spiritbox, The Amity Affliction, Iron Maiden, Dance Gavin Dance, Saosin and Polyphia.

Social media is... Draining our souls but it's super important to be able to connect with people and stay relevant, especially during the last two years. It's also nice to be able to show our listeners who we are as people outside of our music and stage performances.

My favourite app at the moment is... The Google calendar app. A bit boring, I know, but with all the huge things coming up for us, it's good to stay organised.

To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... When we played at a house party, drank too much and Ryan forgot the intro to 'Covered In Chrome'.

Life on the road can be... Don't know, COVID has stopped us from that experience so far, but we imagine it would be challenging yet rewarding.

If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Jagerbombs.

The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... Playing on a rickety stage that almost collapsed whenever there was a bass drum hit.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Definitely Steven Wright. It'd be a great contrast to our music and live shows.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? I would choose Barcelona, it's where I grew up for most of my childhood and teenage life. I miss a lot of the lifestyle and culture that it harbours. Not to mention, it would make touring so much easier and cheaper.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party? First would Maria Brink, because I would love to pick her brain about fry-screaming technique and how she blends her cleans and harsh vocals together so well, not to mention she seems like a lot of fun. Matt Greiner, so we can share a lovely steak dinner with a bottle of August Burns red. And Kerser, because he is the sickest.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us? I think that we would have to bust out the Lazy Susan and put on a Korean spread with some spicy pork bulgogi, kimchi hotpot, stir-fried fish cake, Korean fried chicken and all the sides to match. Soju is also mandatory. Go easy on me though, I'm still winging half of it (we will also have to UberEats the fried chicken, sorry).

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? We all love animals, most of us have cats at home and would love the possibility of a dog if apartment/ touring life wasn't a poor lifestyle for dog parenting.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... I would just say American Honey because it's great for the throat, but then again, a nice case of red wine doesn't get left untouched in our band meetings.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... This question varies very heavily for the five of us. But Jackson has probably been within the last 12 hours. He is very strong.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Dishes. I'll clean the toilet, change the cat litter, wash a wheelie bin if I have to, but you wouldn't catch me dead washing the dishes.

Do you have any phobias... Cockroaches. You'll all find out soon enough.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? We would partake in a 'Big Brother' style show except we'd all get along and it would be bad tv because we're not tearing each other limb from limb.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I would prank Darcy Handley from Terra by filling his snare drum with baked beans, preferably warm beans, but it doesn't matter. It's not really detrimental to him, I just want to hear him say: "Hey, why does my snare sound like beans?"

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Vegan Hood. They do this vegan beef laksa with hokkien eggie noodles and boy, it's incredible.

You can also get the same fake beef chunks in a pepper sauce with veggies, it's honestly so similar to real steak chunks. Positively, delightfully coma-inducing, and without the stomach aches and acid reflux that fast food gives you.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Omg I am SUCH a Harley Quinn. I'm like so crazy lol but like so self-aware. She's so badass and people love her hahaha.

Last show you binge-watched? 'Inventing Anna'. That accent is enthralling and ridiculous.
