Introducing Leah Flanagan

Leah Flanagan
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Leah Flanagan’s press release labels her a ‘national treasure still to be discovered’.

Leah grew up in the Northern Territory and her environment has left an indelible imprint on her songwriting. Her understated approach has still seen her manage to collaborate with the likes of Sinead O’Connor, John Cale and Meshell Ndegeocello.

Leah has recently relocated to Sydney and this fresh inspiration is being put into practice as she records her new EP with Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil) and Niall Anderson (Gin Wigmore) at the helm.

Who is Leah Flanagan... I've had plenty of jo-jobs. Nothing I'd call a career. Let me put it this way, I have an extensive collection of name tags and hair nets.

I sound like... Me!

My first gig was... At a place called Browns Mart in my hometown of Darwin and I was supporting one of my all time favourite bands Wildwater (from Maningrida).

When did you settle on the group’s name... I decided to roll with the name my parents gave me as it was much easier to remember.

In the studio I usually... Spend a lot of time watching, learning, listening, singing, playing guitars and making coffees.

If I could tour with anyone… It would be Meshell Ndegeocello.

Social media is... Something I am getting better at using to promote music instead of checking up on family and friends.

To date my most embarrassing moment was... The time I tried to beat up a man with my shoe after he harassed me about using an empty disabled toilet at a music festival.

Life on the road can be... One deep fried bain-marie to the next.

If you’ll have me on your bill, all I ask is that my rider contains… 1,000 brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass.

The most scary scenario I’ve found myself in was... When me, Keith Moon and David Crosby broke into a little sweet shop on the edge of town where instead of a guard dog, they had a great big Bengal Tiger. I managed to take the tiger out with a can of mace, but the shop owner and his son, that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes.

What celebrity would you love to be spokesperson of the band… Oderous Ungerous from Gwar because he always had something amusing to say or decapitate.
