Introducing Kirsten Moore

Kirsten Moore
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With her debut EP, ‘Bare’, ready for release next week, take the time to introduce yourself to Melbourne singer/ songwriter Kirsten Moore.

Who is Kirsten Moore... I am a girl born from a family of dramatic sorts and writers; it’s always been a part of my life to write, sing and dance like no-one is watching, but I began seriously writing music at 17 and never looked back. It’s cathartic for me to write my experiences and get them on paper and out of my head.

I sound like... I have been inspired by so many incredible female talents. Think the lamentation of Alanis Morissette, the self-examination of Fiona Apple, the eccentricity of Tori Amos, and the quirk of Kate Miller-Heidke.

My first gig was... At a tiny bar in Eltham called The Lane when I was 17. Once the band and myself had set-up there was room for about five other people to watch. It was great because the place looked packed and we felt like rock stars! Haha!

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... As a solo artist this was a pretty easy decision, however, in the past there have been some unusual band names, most memorably being Toast.

In the studio I usually... Have a riot of a time playing with vocal sounds. I recently tried my hand at screamo just for laughs… it didn’t go down so well. I sounded much like a strangled cat. Suffice to say, I won’t be trying that again anytime soon!

If I could tour with anyone... Tori Amos or Eminem. These two artists have shaped me like no other. It might sound like a strange combo but these two have both taught me how to find freedom in my lyric writing and to never hold back.

Social media is... I have a love/ hate relationship with Instagram. Every time someone posts a picture of last night’s dinner I get food envy! However, I love things like Pinterest for video/ fashion inspiration.

My favourite app at the moment is... The Smiling Mind. It’s a really simple, mindfulness meditation app that helps keep me sane! I am a huge advocate for mental health. Meditation is a brilliant way to settle an anxious mind and shut off for just a few minutes a day.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... Many an embarrassing thing has been said during nervous moments on stage. So much so that my brother named his podcast ‘Insane Ramblings’ after my stage antics… Once I found that out I tried to up my game a little!

Life on the road can be... Touring is a riot except for one thing – too many truck-stop meals! Day one it’s a treat. Day 30 you’d rather eat your own hand than another dodgy, meat pie!

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that our rider contains... Organic almonds that have been harvested by monks and activated in pure spring water… I’m just kidding. I’m pretty happy with a half-decent bottle of red.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... I’m a 25-year-old woman who is afraid of the dark. At about 12 I went to the Melbourne Show and walked through a maze for the movie ‘The Mummy’ where people jump out and grab you. I almost punched a poor mummy in the guts before running for my life I was so scared!

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Leonardo DiCaprio, simply because I’ve loved him since I was ten and if he knew I existed that would make my inner child burst with happiness.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Eminem again, because I think he would have some damn good stories, Scarlett Johansson because I not-so-secretly want to be her best friend and Miley Cirus to give her a good talking to and provide her with a pare of pants.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? I love to cook, come on ‘round! The weather is getting warmer so I’d cook a beautiful snapper on the barbie with a pomegranate and quinoa tabouli salad. Yum!

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Good shiraz. There’s nothing better.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... I’ve been a yoga instructor for many years, so I’m often in the gym. However, I prefer to run outdoors or practice yoga instead of pumping iron.

What's the one chore you dislike the most?
Cleaning the bathroom. It’s all body hair, dried toothpaste and grime. My mum always taught me not to be squeamish but really, that’s just gross.

Kirsten Moore will launch the ‘Bare’ EP at The Wesley Anne in Northcote, Melbourne, on Friday 28th November.
