Still in their infancy, Melbourne pop trio Telenova formed after meeting at a songwriting camp in 2020 where they penned their first song together 'Tranquilize'.
That led to their debut EP of the same name released last year, which spawned the single 'Bones' (that landed in triple j’s Hottest 100 at #91).The band consists of lead vocalist, writer and filmmaker Angeline Armstrong, plus multi-instrumentalists-producers Edward Quinn and Joshua Moriarty.
Ahead of appearing at the Bendigo leg of Groovin The Moo, get to know Telenova a little better.
Who is Telenova? We met for the very first time at a songwriting camp in Melbourne where we wrote 'Tranquilize' in one day, decided to start a band shortly after, then 'Tranquilize' became the title of our debut EP last year.
We sound like... The movies.
Our first gig was... Moonee Valley Community Festival; the band before us was a Frankie Valli tribute band in full sequence suits.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... Ange: I had a dream where I threw the suggestion of 'Telenova' in the band chat (didn't have any idea what it meant) and it was unanimously agreed in my dream, so there was really nothing anyone could do about it once I'd woken up.
In the studio we usually... Start with a break and go get a coffee.
If we could tour with anyone... Hermione, Ron and Harry.
Social media is... Lame.
My favourite app at the moment is... Josh: The International Cricket Council app. Ange: The weather app. Sunny days should be spent outdoors.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... Ange: I feel like I embarrass myself every day. Fifteen minutes ago in the green room at Oxford Art Factory, I tried to offer Ed some water from a water cooler that had no water dispenser!?
Life on the road can be... Fun. But also if you're flying places, lots of staring at a baggage carousel tbh.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... A sailor's hat.
The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Seeing Mick Jagger's face up close.
What celebrity/famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Jeff Goldblum.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Cusco. Cos it's cold.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Josh: Busta Rhymes. Ed: Mickey Avalon. Ange: My management team because they rule.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Ed: M-E-T-H. Ange: Uhmm, probably a poke bowl or a pita bread pizza with potato, bocconcini and caramelised onion. Your choice on mine or Ed's place for dinner.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Lover. We love Josh's cat, Pants.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Some kind of yum soda water.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... In a movie.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Dusting because I have hay fever.
Do you have any phobias... Josh: Nothing. Ed and Ange: Worms. Worms growing inside of and coming out of people is the most terrifying thing ever. And they wriggle. It's just not right.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? Josh: Absolutely not, I will not be manipulated. You can't win. It's impossible to come out looking good.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Ed: Joshua Moriarty; any way possible. Josh: Edward Quinn; by any means necessary.
Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Shawcross Pizza on Brunswick Street.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Hermione, Ron and Harry. Debatable who's Ron and who's Harry.
Last show you binge-watched? 'Succession'.
