Introducing Indie Pop Artist Darcy Doe

Darcy Doe is an emerging indie pop artist from the Gold Coast.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

After arriving on the indie scene earlier this year with her brand of neon-noir pop in the form of 'Burn Me Down', Yugambeh/ Gold Coast artist Darcy Doe returns with her next sonic adventure.

Written about friendships and wasting away nights with unbridled sharehouse conversations, 'Fitzroy Baby' features darker tones that still glisten with an exotic intensity – it's raunchy rhythm and seductive melody will cascade over your senses like an intoxicating slow dance.

"This is a song about a house on Kerr Street in Fitzroy, Melbourne, and the people that were in that house," shares Darcy.

"So many nights we spent around a little wooden table in the concrete courtyard next to the clothes horse where we talked it all out, or in the too-loud bar on the corner, or the darkened curb for secret telling and a break from all the noise."

Who is Darcy Doe... A genderless alien from the outer reaches of some uncharted corner of the universe. But I'm also an emerging indie pop artist from the Gold Coast region.

I sound... Kind of like if Robyn had a baby with Julia Stone. Synth-driven pop with sweet and tender vocals.

My first gig... Will be in Byron Bay at The Beach Hotel on 29 September, with Dani Teveluwe and Geniie Boy supporting.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... The name Darcy Doe was born out of a desire to be truer to myself as an artist.

The Darcy part comes from the name I might have been given if I'd been born with different coloured hair, and the Doe part comes from the 'Jane Doe/ John Doe' concept of the nameless/ unknown person.

I found Darcy Doe in a hidden corner of myself and they are the person I could have been in another lifetime or an alternate universe.

In the studio... I usually have the absolute best time of my life. It's my favourite place to be, surrounded by creative people exploring all the possible paths a song could take in it's production journey.

If I could tour with anyone... It would be Harry Styles. I mean could you imagine? HUGE shows. So much fun on stage. And the songs we would write together? *chef's kiss* I can't wait.

Social media is... Hard and high-key toxic. I actually just want to sit and write songs, not hack the algorithms. But if it means I get to share those songs with people all over the world it is also a pretty amazing tool.

My favourite app at the moment is... My Notes app. Where I keep all my little lists and little song ideas, and little memos about why the world doesn't suck, so when I feel like the world sucks I go in there and get a little reminder.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... I realised I was naked in a spa with all of my high school peers and I couldn't get out because they'd see me naked. It was a dream, but I'm still super embarrassed about it.

Life on the road can be... Liberating, but you gotta remember that there are other food groups besides carbohydrates. Corn chips and hummus does not equal a balanced diet, even though it feels so right at the time.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... Corn chips and hummus and a heater because I get shivery when I'm nervous and cold.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... This one time I was walking down a street in Fitzroy after dark on my way home from work, and a man was walking up the street toward me. I got the creepiest vibe from him, but didn't want to make it obvious that I was avoiding him by crossing the street, so I bucked up my courage and tried to keep it cool.

When I got to the point where we were almost passing I looked up at his face and he was completely covered in blood and he just smiled at me and kept walking. Safe to say I was shook.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band? Without a doubt in my mind it has to be Bob Irwin. He's just got a good vibe.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? I would live in Amsterdam, it's a city that feels like home to me. I love the cycling, I love the culture, I love psychedelics, I love the people. It's all good.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party? Michelle Obama, Sam Harris, and Willow Smith. These are all people that have some incredible insight to share, and I would like to bless my little dining table with that energy.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Most likely a curry, with tofu and veggies and papadums. It's a go-to, but it's delicious and we'll all feel happy.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Lover. Big time lover. I have a beautiful border collie x wolfhound and he is the light of my life.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Magic mushrooms? I wanna sit under a tree on a hill, breathe colours and see sound.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Saturday morning!

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Oh gosh definitely hanging out the washing, and also putting the washing away. It feels like a task that is just never over.

Do you have any phobias... I am super duper scared of spiders. What business do they have needing so many legs or eyes?! And they move so fast and sometimes they just disappear and you KNOW they are somewhere in an item of clothing you plan to wear later in the day. Spiders are unacceptable.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Maybe that ninja show, but I would need to train for like two years to build up the strength and agility. I'm keen though if someone wants to sponsor me?

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Ok, it would have to be my housemates and I reckon I'd go the classic clingwrap over the toilet bowl. It'll be so messy.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? I have to recommend Viet Rose in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Not that they necessarily stay open super late, but their laksa is incredible.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? I would say I'm a bit of a Bulbasaur. Here's how the Internet describes Bulbasaur: 'Bulbasaur is considered the most peaceful of the starting Pokemon. They enjoy basking in the sunlight and relaxing. While they can be kind of lazy, they still have a lot of energy and prove to be loyal in battle.'

Darcy Doe plays The Beach Hotel (Byron Bay) 29 September and The Songwriting Prize 2022 Sydney semi-final at Wildfire Lounge 30 September.
