Introducing Indie Electronic Artist Fellamalad

Fellamalad is an expat Australian electronic artist currently living in London.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

An Aussie expat living in London, Fellamalad is an electronic artist who fuses indie rock and psychedelic tones into his original productions.

His current release is the grove-heavy 'Second To None', a track that began life years ago as a spontaneous synth experiment before it lay idle until a jam session with Fellamalad's collaborators back in Australia brought it back to life.

"The song speaks to the ups and downs of being in a long-distance relationship and suggests one could only get through it if their partner was truly second to none," Fellamalad says.

Who is... Fellamalad is recording project originating from northern Sydney. While it's mainly a solo project, there has been assistance with recording and creative direction from other artists.

The project was born out of a desire to learn how to record music after many friendly jam sessions at friends' houses from 2018 onwards.

I sound like... Fellamalad sounds like a bit of an indie and electronic crossover. Sometimes it can veer towards the likes of LCD Soundsystem or with tracks that are more sample and beats heavy towards something like Nicolas Jaar.

My first gig was... First gig hasn't occurred yet! It will be in London when I can figure out how to play live.

When did you settle on your artistic name, and was it a unanimous decision... The name was chosen in early 2021, more out of necessity since a release was coming up.

When my great grandfather didn't know someone's name he used to call them 'fellow me lad', so once you smash that together you get the weird name Fellamalad.

In the studio I usually... Record bits and pieces at home when I can after work or in any spare time. It's always good to keep a relaxed vibe when doing it but things can get less fun when trying to take a song from 75 per cent completed to 100 per cent.

If I could tour with anyone... Would Tame Impala be too cliche of an answer? Or Gorillaz?

Social media is... A big waste of time sometimes.

My favourite app at the moment is... Translate. It's helping me learn to speak to my Spanish family.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... When I release any music. Haha, nah just kidding. Maybe when I hired out a studio space on the other side of town to practice and didn't take a guitar pick. Ended up playing with a credit card.

Life on the road can be... Tiring from what I have hear from bands who go on tour.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... I would love some cold water and maybe a healthy dinner to combat the post-show beers.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Trying to record myself singing anything ever.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... British comedian Noel Fielding. I feel like he could come up with some good adjectives and paint some funky pictures for the music.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Well, I live in London now, so here at the moment. But anywhere else? Maybe somewhere in Spain because it's beautiful and I have family there.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... My grandfather and great grandfather just to see them again and talk about their lives. The third person; maybe I could throw in someone like Paul McCartney because he seems like a good guy and he is a fairly decent songwriter.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Enchiladas.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Love pets, how could you not. Dogs and cats and all the rest as long as the pet is happy.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... I would be worried about the expense, but I would love a case of 4 Pines Pale Ale.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... I don't recall entering a gym in recent years.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Vacuuming carpets. It's so loud and boring.

Do you have any phobias... Phobia of not leading a fulfilling life. Is that too deep?

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Absolutely not.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I would prank my partner and I would hide fake spiders in her clothes.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Mario's Kebabs in Manly Corso, Sydney.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? I've been told I look like Gumby. Maybe Gumby. He seems nice.

Last show you binge-watched? 'The Office' (UK or US); just love all the antics of the early seasons and of course the Jim & Pam love story.
