Introducing Indie Band The Splints

The Splints are an indie rock-pop band from Brisbane.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Four self-confessed larrikins who enjoy a good time on and off stage, The Splints are an indie band from Brisbane focused on pop-rock hooks.

Gathered from various other bands, The Splints first came together last year before releasing their debut single 'Come & Get It' at the start of 2023.

Last week they returned with their sophomore single 'I Just Wanna Know' that's another slice of energised indie vibes perfect for group bop-alongs.

"The song's foot to the floor energy has cemented it as one of our favourites, having been a staple in our live set since the very beginning," says The Splints.

"It's a song we feel has grown with us and has blossomed into something we didn't know it was – a bloody, old-fashioned sing-along."

Ahead of playing a home-town show at Black Bear Lodge (20 May), here the band share a few insights into their musical style as well highlighting some of their quirky traits.

Who are The Splints... We are a band that's been around since 2022. We all met playing in other bands and running into each other at venues. We came together to create this project.

We're four larrikins that enjoy having a good time and are hopeful we can pass that energy off to people listening to our music. We like having good times and want to pass the good times and energy onto everyone else.

We sound like... We'd like to think we've made our own sound based off the sounds of our childhood idols. We think we have the sounds of The Kooks, Panic At The disco, The Killers and The Wombats with a splash of 2010s metalcore.

Our first gig was... At Tomcat, Brisbane July 2022. It was a humbling beginning. We were very nervous but as soon as we started playing it felt like it all came together, and we've been building on that performance ever since.

When did you settle on the band name and was it a unanimous decision... It was a spontaneous name suggested by our drummer in the middle of a jam session. He broke his drum stick during the session and suggested, what about The Splints?

We all had a bit of a laugh about it but came back and decided it was fitting. This was the first name all members agreed on.

If we could tour with anyone... We would love to do a tour with Catfish And The Bottlemen.

Social media is... Very difficult but such a crucial part of being a band. You need to have a social media presence to show who you are and make people want to listen to your music and come to your shows.

Our favourite app at the moment is... Guitar Tuna: Most essential app for a band. YouTube: You can find anything on YouTube; we use it to teach ourselves so many crucial things. Instagram: It is perfect for connecting with artists and all sorts of personalities.

To date, our most embarrassing moment was... One of our members was the MC for a comedy night. He trusted a fart backstage right as they called him on. He shouldn't have trusted it and had to proceed with the show.

Life on the road can be... We don't currently know what life on the road is like, but we're eager to find out. If anyone wants to bring us along on a tour we're ready when you are.

If you'll have us on your bill all we ask is that the rider contains... Four pairs of underwear, a six pack of XXXX and one box of Telfast.

The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in as a band was... The morning of our debut single launch – a support band pulled out.

Which celebrity would you like to have as a spokesperson for the band? Ron Burgundy.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would it be and why? Germany, not only is there already a music scene there but it's a unique place we could live and try get our music heard.

Three people you'd like to have over for a dinner party? Ozzy Osbourne, Costa Georgiadis and Harold Holt.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? A curry.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Three members love pets and one is highly allergic.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Gold.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... No comment.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Washing dishes, laundry and invoicing.

Do you have any phobias? Josh hates flying, developed by moving from the UK to Australia when he was 17. Cob is scared of the open ocean.

Would you ever partake in a reality TV show? The boys would like to partake in a series like 'The Kardashians', but it's called The Splints and they'll never watch any episodes back.

If you could prank any friend, who would it be, and how would you take them down? James would prank Josh and tell him they're playing with Paul McCartney at Suncorp Stadium, and have him arrive to realise they aren't on the bill.

Best late-night feed to put you in a food coma? Pizza Kebab in the Valley.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? James: Gimli from 'The Lord Of The Rings' because he's a little fat guy. Cob: Donny from 'The Wild Thornberrys'; if anyone sits next to him for five minutes they'll understand why. Josh: Jack Black from 'School Of Rock' because he teaches music and tries to influence what everyone listens too. Jack: The mole man from 'The Simpsons'.

Last show you binge watched and what kept you coming back? Josh: 'Ted Lasso' – it's funny, shocking, heartfelt.
