An emerging alternative rock band from Brisbane, last month Pointe released their debut single 'Guard Rails', a song exploring the anxiety and reward of making big life changes.
Formed by teenage mates after attending separate high schools, and although still in their infancy, Pointe have already begun to make waves in the local scene with a string of well received live shows.
"I wrote 'Guard Rails' about a lot of different things," singer Rose Fogarty says, "however I feel it boils down to that feeling of dread when it comes to making a seemingly impossible change in your life.
"Then once you make the change realising how rewarding it is. That anxiety before taking that step often feels worse than the change itself. That feeling can last months or even years longer than the actual moment of change."
The track showcases Rose's talents on vocals and piano, along with bandmates Evander Adams-Post (drums), Jude Spann (bass/ production), and Jake Park (guitar), with mastering by Paul Blakey.
Ahead of a couple of upcoming shows (scroll down for the details), we get to know the members of Pointe.
Who is... Pointe formed from two groups of high school friends, and their shared love of music. Connected through the primary school friendship formed between Jude and Jake, after attending separate high schools they reconnected, and realised they had independently come to the same conclusion, to start a band.
Bringing in friends they had made along their high school journeys, the introduction of Rose, Evander, and Daniel is what brought the band together as Pointe.
We sound like... We find it hard to pin-point our sound, but think Interpol meets Cranberries, with some post-hardcore and noise rock influences. Bands that come to mind are Sonic Youth, Fugazi, and Unwound.
Our first gig was... At The Cave Inn. An amazing venue that is desperately needed in Brisbane, supporting the emerging, underground, and all in-between.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... The group's name was decided after deliberating for some time, but it was Jude's mum who suggested the name Pointe, haha!
In the studio we... Have kept it DIY. Jude has studied audio engineering and is an engineer/ producer outside of the band, so we've been able to record it all ourselves at home using Jude's DIY setup, as well as having access to the studios Jude has access too through his studies.
If we could tour with anyone... Rose: I think touring with local musician friends would be fun, I'd be happy to tour with anyone right now honestly. Evander: In a realistic sense it would be dogworld, but in a crazy sense prolly The Beatles. Jake: Fugazi, Adele, Johnny Cash. Daniel: As a band it would suit and be super cool to tour with Interpol, but personally I would tour with C.W. Stoneking. Jude: Electralane or Life Without Buildings in a fantasy world.
Social media is... Rose: Bad, good, and addictive. Evander: Time consuming. Jake: Not good for you. Daniel: Brain-rot, but useful for messaging people. Jude: Unfortunately now a massive part of this industry.
My favourite app at the moment is... Rose: Pizza Vs Skeleton, Notes and voice memos. Evander: The Notes app, great for writing lyrics, putting together set lists, writing to-do lists and organising your thoughts. Jake: iBeer free, it's next level. Daniel: Translink. It helps me find the best bus to catch, but the new version is annoying to get used to.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... Evander: I played a show and went to play these big hits in this pause that none of my band played with me! Having no one with me made me tense up and throw my sticks across the room and miss the crash hit on one that the band actually played. This one still keeps me up at night.
Jake: The time my pedals exploded and everyone pointed and laughed at me and our show was delayed. Daniel: I ordered a matcha and someone asked me if I was brat and I didn't know what they were talking about.
Life on the road can be... Rose: I don't know yet, haha. Evander: Cramped! Daniel: Challenging being away from family so long.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Rose: We don't have a rider, but I'd like some cheese, and mint choc chip gelato, and some seedless grapes. Evander: Reece's Cups! Daniel: Beer, nuts and pretzels to nibble on. Jude: Anything but beer honestly.
The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Rose: Bled through my shorts in Grade 8 whilst with family friends in high ropes treetops course, I turned behind me to see my school chaplain.
Evander: I served a bloke at my old job who had a gun on him. It's all good, we're mates now. Jake: When I had to drive up a windy rainy road for four hours. Jude: I almost sent phantom power to a ribbon mic, was inches away from finical ruin.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band? Rose: Amy Taylor. Evander: Definitely Adam Sandler 'cause he can put our stuff in his REALLY GOOD movies and play an acoustic set with us like he did with Deftones and Incubus.
Jake: Eminem 'cause he can rap about us very fast, he's pretty cool. Daniel: Morgan Freeman because he is the voice that is inside my head. Jude: RXKNephew, he would have a lot to say, he always has a lot to say.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Rose: Somewhere with good urban planning. Evander: Idk, just somewhere in Russia to reconnect with my heritage.
Daniel: Dublin because it's beautiful there and it's part of my heritage. Jude: Berlin, for the art and music scene, also Osaka or Tokyo for the same reasons – some of my favourite bands come for Japan.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party? Rose: Michael Cera, Amy Taylor, and Eric Andre. Evander: Doesn't really matter who, just people that are down for some 'Cluedo' or 'Betrayal At House On The Hill'.
Jake: Anyone that wouldn't mind waiting three hours for me to cook something. Daniel: I'd invite Dumbledore, Gandalf and Alan Watts because they definitely are on the same wavelength and have some crazy convos.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Rose: Lasagne. Evander: Gluten-free French toast. Jake: I make a mean shakshouka. Daniel: Spaghetti bolognaise. Jude: Some sort of stir fry with what I can find.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Rose: LOVER! Evander: Pets are very cute, but growing up with a bunch of ratty dogs, I can't say I'll be getting one of my own in the future.
Daniel: I love furry friends especially when they have beautiful personalities. Jake: I love dogs, I love 'em. Jude: One thing to say, cats > dogs.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Rose: Nothing, I am sober. Evander: Peanut butter chocolate ice cream from Baskin-Robbins. Jake: Chicken Crimpy Shapes. Daniel: Sarsaparilla. Jude: Blue V.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Evander: On a cruise ship I worked on this time last year. Daniel: Years ago, I barely go. Jude: Yeah. . .
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Rose: Cleaning windows. Evander: Grocery shopping, like surely just let me get my stuff free. Jake: Folding socks. I still don't know how to fold socks. Jude: I'm with Evander on this one.
Do you have any phobias... Rose: Confrontation because it's really scary. Evander: Sleeping through something really important; just the thought stresses me out of my head. Jake: Getting any illness that involves your brain dying. Jude: Deafness, I imagine it would feel quite isolating.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? Rose: NO NEVER! Evander: I would 100 per cent go on 'Survivor'; the challenges are sick, and the social strategy is fascinating. Jake: Definitely one of those terrible ghost hunting ones. Daniel: No way I would hate that sh.t.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Rose: I would do one of those early 200 pranks where they go in a portaloo then come out and they are in an office and I would do it to my brothers.
Evander: Definitely my siblings and I would just make stupid noises to try and get them to jump. Daniel: Whoopee cushion on Jake. Jude: Whoopee cushion on Daniel while he gets Jake.
Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Rose: GYG. Evander: Nando's, Schnitz, Zambrano, and Hot Star. Jake: Any kebab joint. HSP with a kilo-tonne of garlic sauce.
Daniel: I don't know many midnight feed spots, but good takeaway place is Kebab Palace – the best platters. Jude: Any kebab from any kebab place, they're always open late.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Rose: Gumball from 'The Amazing World Of Gumball'. Evander: I'm gonna go proper woke and say Lee Everett from 'Telltale's The Walking Dead', 'cause he as the protagonist is what you make him!
Daniel: Patrick cus I'm a f...ing idiot and can zone out at times. Jude: I wanna say someone cool so bad but it's probably Butters, bit oblivious sometimes.
Last show you binge-watched? Rose: 'Peep Show'. Very funny. Evander: 'Regular Show' and 'Total Drama Island' for the nostalgia. Jake: 'The Sopranos'. Daniel: 'Stranger Things' with my girlfriend. Jude: 'Severance', but 'Ripley' before that; haven't seen much hype around that show and it upsets me. It's amazing.
