An emerging singer-songwriter from the Gold Coast, Chloe Styler's brand of stylish, catchy indie pop has seen her nominated at last year's Gold Coast Music Awards as well as being a finalist in the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition.
After releasing a couple of singles so far in 2022 ('Where We Stand' and 'Loving You') Chloe continues her fondness for relationship-themed songwriting on 'Girlfriend'.Co-written with friend Sarah Buckley (The Buckleys), and featuring Vera Blue guitarist Sam Telford and Middle Kids drummer Harry Day doing what they do best, 'Girlfriend' finds Styler exploring dance-pop territory for the first time.
The track's lyrics also paint a personal portrait of Chloe's own dating life.
"Dating in 2020 was already hard enough before adding in the fact that the guys I found myself talking to were either emotionally unavailable, great at ghosting, or prone to playing mind games.
"I quickly realised I'm more of a 'Girlfriend', and that I didn't want to waste my time with guys who only wanted a casual fling. The catch is though; you have to date to become a girlfriend."
Who is Chloe Styler... I've been writing music since I was 15, but only released my first song 5 years ago. Since then, I've released an EP and six singles, which have all shown a different side of my musical influences.
I grew up on the Gold Coast and still call it home, so I'd say the coastal vibe of my surroundings has crept its way into my music. However, I'm a songwriter to my core, so I'd also credit my intense storytelling to the country music that my parents played when I was a kid.
I sound like... My music is influenced by all types of artists, and it never stays constant. Lately I'd say I’ve been leaning toward the sounds of Maggie Rogers, Maisie Peters and Kacey Musgraves.
My first gig was... My very first paid performance was a covers gig at O'Reillys Canungra Valley Vineyards on the Gold Coast back in 2016. I've been performing since I was a kid at talent quests, Eisteddfods and singing concerts though; so probably one of those.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... I can thank my Nanny for this name!
In the studio I usually... Eat all the snacks.
If I could tour with anyone... Vance Joy would be phenomenal.
Social media is... A blessing and a curse.
My favourite app at the moment is... TikTok. I feel like it's the only app that people can genuinely be themselves on. I love how I don't have to curate everything I post.
Majority of the time I have an idea and film it straight away; there's not as much thought that goes into it as there is with other photo/ video sharing apps.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... I forgot how to play my own song at a gig at The Triffid. That was fun. But I got through it and the crowd was very kind to me.
Life on the road can be... Really bad for my diet. I find myself going through McDonald’s drive-through wayyyy too many times.
If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that my rider contains... Hot water: I'll bring the tea and manuka!
The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Jumping up on stage to play two songs before Lee Kernaghan's set at the Big Red Bash in 2017. It was me, my guitar and 7,000 people on the edge of the Simpson Desert.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Is it too cliché to say Taylor Swift!? 'Hey Stephen' was one of the first songs I taught myself on guitar. So it'd be a dream come true to have a fan in Dr. Taylor Swift.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? London. The two-year working visa sounds so fun and once you're over there it's so easy to travel around Europe. I might do this anyway to be honest.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Stevie Nicks, The Chicks and Elton John. That counts as five, sorry!
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Chicken pesto. It's my go-to and got me through my five-year uni degree.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? One hundred per cent lover! I have a two-year old Toy Cavoodle named Dixie. She is my little best friend and I couldn't imagine not loving pets.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Are we talking alcoholic or non-alcoholic? Alcoholic: gin and tonics. Non-alcoholic: lemon, lime and bitters, lol.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... January. I had a New Year's resolution then cancelled my membership about three weeks later.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Mopping the floors. It just takes so long and then you have to wait for the floors to dry before you can move around. It's a necessary evil.
Do you have any phobias... I very, very, very much dislike cockroaches. It's probably not a phobia but definitely a strong dislike. It stems back to when I was seven and a cockroach landed on my face in bed.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? I've started watching 'Big Brother' this year and I totally think I could give that a crack.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? My bff Jess because I know she'd be a good sport about it. I'd probably get her up on the stage at a gig for backing vocals with zero prior warning.
Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? I haven't had a midnight feed since I was at uni, but if you were asking me this question three years ago I'd 100 per cent say a HSP.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? April Kepner from 'Grey's Anatomy'. I'm the most organised person I know, I'm often times highly-strung, but I'm also super compassionate and always there for my friends.
Last show you binge-watched? I'm currently binge-watching 'Vikings' on Netflix. My family emigrated from Norway in the mid 1800s, so we have familial ties to Scandinavia and the Vikings era. It's super fascinating.
