The Liquid Project are a young WAAPA-sourced band ready to bring some of the best original funk, disco and soul music you'll be likely to hear in Western Australia.
Launched in 2020, they've gained attention and regular airplay from local music champions RTR since launching their debut album, and have been invited to some of the premier local music festivals such as Fairbridge Festival and the Perth International Jazz Festival.Expect a fun dose of funk, some dizzying jazzy solos, and some footstomping disco when The Liquid Project play The Hoopla Sessions next month.
Here, band member Yoann Degioanni shares some insights about the band.
Who is The Liquid Project... We are a six-piece funk, disco and soul band; we started out as ten but that was probably too many in hindsight. We launched an album in 2020 and have been very grateful to do festivals shows, and tours since then.
We sound like... Soul. We have heart, groove, lots of improv and some strong stories woven through our music.
Our first gig was... An open mic night at Mojos.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... I initially wanted it to be called Liquid Liquid, but it was taken as a name, and since the size and undertaking of the band was very new for me Liquid Project made sense.
In the studio we usually... Mess around a little, we have a lot of big personalities.
If we could tour with anyone... Odette Mercy & Her Soul Atomics; ripper Perth band. Otherwise maybe Hiatus Kaiyote.
Social media is... Annoying, but essential.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... No one knew who Christopher Walken was at a gig once. . . it's a long story!
Life on the road can be... Tough. It's really not easy. I get very cranky without adequate sleep.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... All you can drink beers/ whatever drinks we want.
The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... Any gig really, they come together so well but it can be really hard getting everyone in the room.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose? Barcelona; it's divine and sprawling with artistic life and creativity, and beauty.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? My pasta special.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Lover.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... A year ago.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? No.
Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Kebab after a night out.
Last show you binge-watched? 'Ozark'.
The Liquid Project will be joined by Grand Remedy and Claudie Joy & The Joy Boys at The Hoopla Sessions at Freo.Social (Fremantle) 31 July.
