A singer-songwriter from South East Melbourne, Zachary Leo has been crafting funk-flavoured soul-rock music for the last two-plus years.

With influences including Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, Prince and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Zachary pens songs about heartbreak, self-destruction, and love.

His latest release is 'So Good', written from the perspective of someone struggling to end a relationship but who is also dealing with feelings of guilt and regret.

Who is Zachary Leo... I am a funk/ rock/ soul artist from Melbourne, Australia.

I sound like... Think vintage funk with some modern pop twists. Some of my influences include Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Funkadelic and Jamiroquai.

My first gig was... In the basement of the Grace Darling Hotel in Melbourne in 2019; I managed to sell it out too which was sick.

When did you settle on your artistic name? It's my first name and middle name; I just felt my surname (Gulavin) would be too hard to spell or pronounce due to past experiences I've had, so I tried to make it easier.

In the studio I usually... Get sh.t done.

If I could tour with anyone... Definitely Anderson .Paak. That dude is incredible.

Social media is... Stressful.

My favourite app at the moment is... Depop, because it's just the best.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... There was a particular show in Frankston where I'd had a little too much to drink and there was a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover involved. Re-watching videos the next day was a tough thing to sit through.

Life on the road can be... I've unfortunately had any touring plans cancelled over the last two years, so hopefully I can answer this question this time next year.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... If there's a Parma I'm there.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Any situation where I am confronted with heights.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Boosty Collins, because he could make absolutely anything sound amazing.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose? I actually really dig Auckland.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Daniel Johns and Neil Finn because they are my musical inspirations, and then probably DeMar DeRozan to convince him to never leave the Chicago Bulls.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Chicken risotto with sweet potato, spinach and parmesan.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? I couldn't live without my two dogs.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Your strongest coffee.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... This morning.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Cleaning the toilet.

Do you have any phobias... Heights, definitely heights. I just can't deal with being up that high.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Probably not.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? To be honest, I am a pretty sarcastic person so I feel like I am always pranking people naturally. I definitely annoy a lot of people, hahaha!

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? I know it's bad to say, but I was always the kind of guy to get an egg and bacon McMuffin after a night out or for a midnight snack, so probably Maccas. But also any pop-up kebab van that's open after midnight.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? My goal in life is to be Phil Dunphy, so I guess I'm always striving for that.

Last show you binge-watched? 'Ted Lasso' and 'YOU'. Both amazing shows.

Zachary Leo (and his band) play The Workers Club (Melbourne) 26 November.
