A veteran electronic artist with four-plus decades of experience, Konradd (pronounced 'konrad dee') continues his exploration of indietronica with a move into soulful pop on his newest track 'It's Too Much'.
With vocals contributed by Adelaide future bass and trap vocalist-producer CARZi, 'It's Too Much' takes inspiration from disparate parts and experiences; every element a sample.A tech-positivist, Konradd first began programming digital music on an Atari ST computer in 1981; it was from this point onwards that Konradd actively looked for new ways to compose electronica.
The '90s was spent holding DJ residencies in Adelaide exploring and disseminating house and techno, and as technology progressed, Konradd moved with the evolvement of digital tools keeping abreast of the various techniques and tools when sampling, programming and producing.
Who is Konradd... I spent around ten years DJing in Adelaide. I have been producing electronic music on and off for around 30-40 years as a hobby finally settling on some choice software to play around with samples when I have a moment to spare.
I sound like... I really don't have a sound like anyone. I like most genres of music and I like to compose on the spur of the moment/ where the mood takes me.
My first gig was... My first DJ gig was in Toowoomba, QLD. At a place called Caesars Palace. The resident DJ there at the time (1980) wanted to have a holiday, so he spotted me there for a couple of weeks.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... I settled on Konradd as it's short for Konrad Date, which is my name.
In the studio I usually... Work with samples in a programme called Reason 12 and consume plenty of good scotch or bourbon.
If I could tour with anyone... No interest in touring... sorry.
Social media is... Overrated and in the wrong hands.
My favourite app at the moment is... Reason 12 by Propellerhead now called Reason Studios. I settled on Reason when it first came out in 1994. Before that I was using Cubase Audio.
I settled on Reason for its ability to sequence in real time and the audio/ sequencing/ effects/ VST tools imbedded within its programming. The product has just got better and better over the years becoming a real studio for production and real-time capabilities it has.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... At 13, hopping out of a shower at home, when a Catholic nun Mum and Dad had invited around for dinner came into the bathroom while I was reaching for a towel.
Life on the road can be... I've never been on the road except for to go and see the folks who live in Mount Gambier and of course, holidays.
If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that our rider contains... Glenfiddich 21, Slane, cashews and roast pork with crackling.
The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... When I was on an Air Cadet camp and I was walking back to the campsite; I went head-first into a giant spider's web with the spider in the middle of it. I crapped myself!
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Chevy Chase. Because he would give you all the wrong answers.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? I love may place here in Australia too much to even consider living abroad.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... I could get into some deep water as there would be three 'accidental deaths' here!
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Roast pork with all the trimmings. :)
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? I have a cat; her name is Winter. She follows me around like a dog sometimes and is great company.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... The Kracken Rum... yo ho-ho!
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Yesterday when I was helping to set up rowing machines for a group of students to compete for an online competition.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Gardening.
Do you have any phobias? I have no phobias to think of. . . does this mean I'm not human?
Would you ever partake in a reality show? No. As with social media, it's overrated and in the wrong hands.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Not a good place to go. . . it could come back and bight me in the arse!
Best local takeaway joint for a 2am feed that will leave you with a food coma? It's been such a long time since I've had a yiros binge after a night DJing at a city night club.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Ron Swanson. . . he's quick witted and sarcastic, and gives that Garfield look when asked stupid questions.
Last show you binge-watched? 'The Orville', because of the 'it went nowhere' theme. Only two seasons and I'm still waiting for the third season. Is Seth MacFarlane lost in space?
