A solo electronic artist who captures emotively rich, yet delicately sparse layers of sounds to create a brand of progressive, intelligent dance music, Juno Mamba is a burgeoning EDM talent.
We first met Juno aka Vinci Javier at the start of the 2010s as a member of electronic outfit Gold Fields – it'd be a decade later till he explored his own solo endeavours with his debut single, 'Flicker', in late 2019.Space as inspiration. Considerations and exploration. Foundations and obliteration; it's all relative. Life, death, decay and beauty; it's all consciousness. This is the foundation of Juno Mamba.
Ahead of his appearance at Falls Festival, Juno Mamba sits down to discuss his solo work, as well as revealing a few tidbits about his personal life.
Who is Juno Mamba... I'm Vinci, a Filipino-Australian electronic musician and I write and perform under the name Juno Mamba.
I learnt piano from my mum, a classical pianist, when I was seven. I transitioned to guitar in high school and eventually found my love for recording and production when I started recording demos for myself and friends' bands. This led to a curiosity in producing electronic music.
I sound like... Emotive electronic music.
My first gig was... Live on RRR radio December 2019, two months after I released my first single 'Flicker'.
When did you settle on your artistic name, and was it a unanimous decision... I settled on the project name very early on, as I was writing 'Flicker'. The name is a way to give me confidence when I write and produce.
In the studio I usually... Get lost in infinite loops.
If I could tour with anyone... It would be Floating Points.
Social media is... A black hole.
My favourite app at the moment is... Trello. It keeps my life organised.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... Forgetting people's names right after I'm told.
Life on the road can be... Inspiring.
If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... Mangoes.
The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Being followed and harassed by another car late at night.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Kanye West to get an insight into his thoughts and creative process.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Not a city but I'd have to choose Siargao. It's a small island in the Philippines where my father's side of the family are from and is the definition of paradise.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Tadao Ando – so he can show me his design process; John Mayer – to teach me improvisation; Ricky Gervais – have a laugh.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Spanish tomato and halloumi bake. A recent discovery.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? I'm a liker. I like dogs but not ready to have one myself.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Mangoes.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Last week.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Cleaning the house.
Do you have any phobias... Not a phobia, but there was a time that I used to experience sleep paralysis regularly. Nothing more frightening.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? I love to watch them, but I would sit this out.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? A good friend from high school. I love to scare him and record it on video. Very first time was when we were 15 doing work experience together; 19 years later I still find time to jump out behind the door.
Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Jashan Indian Restaurant. Their Gobi 65 is incredible.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Fox Mulder. I'm a curious person and according to a website, he's ranked third for 'most curious character'. And I do love a good alien doco.
Last show you binge-watched? 'Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty'. The cinematography was high energy and engaging.
