Direct from Western Sydney, Regular Bassis are a three-headed party monster who combine rap, singing and killer productions, infusing their own style that incorporates contemporary R&B, Afrobeat and soul.
The group's most recent single 'Hollow Tree' has reached 25k streams on Spotify. Now the trio of Sheph.art, NoSleep and GIVITIMY have turned their attention to their next chapter with newest joint 'Tell Me Something'. Bouncy beats, a looping groove and 'slapping' production give the track an infectious vibe that's enhanced by the rapid-fire lyrical delivery with NoSleep's extra verses adding Aussie-flavoured hip hop feels.
"I wrote my verse with ease," NoSleep recalls. "It was simple as the beat just spoke to me; I felt like I was surrounded by clear blue water with no end to its depth."
Who is Regular Bassis... Sheph.art and GIVITIMY were friends in high school and started their music careers in 2012. A few years after that, Sheph met NoSleep while working at an electrical company and within a short span of time, he was welcomed to the music group.
We all quit our trades to pursue music and work on our own businesses; our passion is to provide a voice to those working in the trades so that their hard work is not undervalued or belittled. Regular Bassis is a family, we help each other, celebrate together and we want to share that with the world through our music.
We sound like... If Burna Boy, Anderson. Paak and The Weeknd adopted some western Sydney drillers and raised them in the studio, that would be our sound.
We try to expand the drill genre by fusing a bit of R&B, Afro-swing and soul. We learnt from the greats, but we know where we come from.
Our first gig was... At Ching-a-Lings Bar in Darlinghurst. We had a tiny venue and a tiny crowd, but we rocked up dapper as hell and had a lot of fun.
When did you settle on the group's name... Sheph.art and myself (GIVITIMY) were at the studio, which at the time was in Sheph's garage. We were brainstorming for an entire day and stopped for dinner.
As we were eating, our manager Uzma said: "This curry is so hot you need to drink milk on a regular basis." And we thought, music and food are our two main loves in life – it's something we do on a REGULAR BASSIS!
In the studio we usually... Our sessions are pretty chill – we share new music, what's new in our lives, cook good food and map out our goals, and we laugh, A LOT. This helps us warm-up and find inspiration for our tracks.
We usually start with the beat and decide what kind of sound we want to create, sometimes we plan our topics and sometimes we improvise, or somebody could have written a verse and we all bring it to life together. Every session is unique and the result is always different.
Social media is... The greatest invention ever. We have a direct connection to all our listeners, can interact with them and speak our mind.
My favourite app at the moment is... With us all being music producers as well as artists, we would definitely agree our favourite app is FL Studio.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... NoSleep's story would definitely be at the top of the list. As an electrician, he would have to wake up early every day for work (think 3-4 am) and work till late at night (Get the name? haha!).
He went to work late a few days because of his sleep deprivation and as a result to embarrass him, the team at his electrical organisation made him wear a tutu to their annual Christmas party. It was embarrassing, but also helped us realise some of the elements that need to change in the culture of the trade world.
Life on the road can be... Exciting and daunting. If only we were able to tour right now.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Freshly ground coffee. We are avid coffee drinkers, the smell of fresh coffee is just something else.
If we could tour with anyone... We would tour with J.Cole; his live shows are on another level, and judging by his subject matter I think we would get along.
The most scariest scenario we've found ourself in was... One night at the studio, NoSleep brought his brother and friend to join in a session. They were writing lyrics and getting super excited when out of nowhere his friend collapsed to the ground.
The music and lights triggered an epileptic seizure and for a moment we thought he was just joking. We were all shocked, but we called the paramedics and he quickly recovered.
What celebrity would you like to be your spokesperson... I would pick Jim Carrey. I think his introduction for Eminem at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards was hilarious; it's a contrast to the music and that's why it worked.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... First I would pick Dr. Dre; he would have the best stories from his time in NWA and he would have some valuable insight in music production.
The second would be Gordon Ramsay, just for a bit of drama. I would assume he would take over the kitchen and cook something amazing. Last would be Gary Vaynerchuk. I'm thinking this dinner party might end with a stabbing, but we'd all learn something from it.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? If Sheph.Art was cooking he would make lamb chops for sure, his marinade is his specialty! GIVITIMY would make a delicious lasagne, creamy with layers for days. And NoSleep is cooking sausages on the BBQ, hope you like them black and crispy (just kidding!).
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Cash! Just kidding, for us it would definitely be premium James Boag.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Haha, let's not go there. It's been a year or so.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Folding clothes, washing the dishes and cleaning our room.
Do you have any phobias? Well, it used to be just heights, but lately the spiders that have been entering into GIVITIMY's house are getting bigger and faster (he lives on a farm). We're thinking it's only a matter of time before they take over.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? I don't like reality shows that just film someone in their everyday life. I wouldn't mind being in something like 'Big Brother' where you get to compete in games and tasks.
