Introducing Country-Pop Duo Scarlet St.

Scarlet St. are a pop-country duo from Adelaide.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Scarlet St. is the merging of two independent singer-songwriters – Josh Oreo and Sarah-Jo Bramfit – who together, draw on vintage instincts to create a modern sound.

A couple in real life, the duo naturally write songs about what they know best; the ups and downs of love. Drawing on contemporary country acts, Scarlet St. places old fashioned-storytelling over modern beats.

Their sound is distinguished by catchy melodic hooks, spacious soundscapes and a dose of quiet attitude.

Scarlet St.'s debut single 'Couldn't Love Me', released last week, is a heart-break song for the ages. The duet speaks of a nostalgia tinged with regret and defeat.

Who is Scarlet St... A contemporary country-pop duo from Adelaide formed in late 2022.

We sound like... You could compare us with other country-pop acts that flirt with R&B like Kane Brown or Maren Morris. But being a duo – and Australian – puts a whole new spin on it. Our sound is a little more laid-back, cruisey.

Our first gig is... In the works. To find our sound, heading to the studio is our first priority. Shoutout to our producer Mario Spate who has a way of forming our abstract ideas into a reality. Our portfolio is coming together now, which means gigs will be on the cards very soon.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... Yes! One evening we were discussing early Hollywood cinema and the 1940s film 'Scarlet Street' came up. By this stage we'd already recorded 'Couldn't Love Me', but we still needed a group name. . . and it just clicked! Old glamour, the plight of an artist, romance – perfect.

In the studio we usually... Arrive with ammunition; generally we've blocked out a full demo beforehand, but also keep an open mind. We like to see what happens and bounce off of each other. There's a lot of random riffing and "how about this?".

If we could tour with anyone... Halsey, Post Malone.

Social media is... Where you find a unique talent and feel like you've discovered them before everyone else.

My favourite app at the moment is... (Josh) Reyburn cyber tuner for tuning pianos; (Sarah-Jo) I am guilty of Pinterest. So many pretty things.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... Josh: 5am, train station, headphones in. Belting along to Harry Styles so loudly that the neighbouring house owner came out in his pyjamas and told me that "people are trying to sleep". Sarah-Jo: I placed my phone down on the ground in a carpark to put something away. I then proceeded to get in the car and drive over my phone.

Life on the road can be... We're yet to hit the road as Scarlet St. so stay tuned for that.

If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... As long as you don't mind the music turned up loud, we're good.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Josh: Brain surgery. Sarah-Jo: Getting lost in my brain.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Sarah-Jo: Conan O'Brien.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Josh: Nashville, for the banjos and the lifestyle. Sarah-Jo: New York for the food, fashion, art and live comedy.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Bette Davis, Jack White, Leonard Cohen.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Homemade pizza. Fresh dough. Lots of olive oil.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Cats, cats, cats.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... You, darling and I would still be on my feet. I would still be on my feet.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Sarah-Jo: We don't gym but I've hopped on the home yoga bandwagon. And Josh runs.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Josh: Dishes. Sarah-Jo: Washing.

Do you have any phobias... Sarah-Jo: Being stuck in a lift. Josh: Not really.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Sarah-Jo: The original 'Queer Eye For The Straight Guy', which is problematic.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Josh: Pranking is cruel.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Honestly, we're usually asleep.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Josh: Severus Snape. Often I am misunderstood but underneath, my intentions are pure. Sarah-Jo: The Eleventh Doctor. I like to time-travel in my head; and who wouldn't want to be Matt Smith?! But like his character, I'm also full of beans and can be unpredictable.

Last show you binge-watched? Josh: 'The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker'. Sarah-Jo: 'Hacks'.
