Introducing Country-Folk Singer-Songwriter Savanah Solomon

Savanah Solomon is a country-folk singer-songwriter from Western Australia.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A singer-songwriter and storyteller from regional Western Australia, Savanah Solomon peddles a heartfelt, raw brand of country, blues and folk.

A regular traveller of WA playing shows with just her voice and guitar, Savanah has released two solo singles 'Lost In Love' and 'Rainbow' (after fronting country-blues band Savanah & The Strays).

On Friday (7 October), Savanah will open proceedings at Perth's Suburban Vibes, the mulitple day live music festival that will host 23 artists at 9 Subiaco spaces – from gardens, laneways, bars, and breweries – with a mix of free and ticketed showcases.

"I'll be kicking off Suburban Vibes in Subi at Hiddlestone Lane from 5-6 pm. Bring a blanket, picnic and wine, and sit back and enjoy some sweet music by myself and Jordy Maxwell at this free event."

Who is Savanah Solomon... I am a singer-songwriter based in Moore River, WA. I love music, the beach, hanging with my dog Skip, and travelling around WA in my van. My passion is songwriting and storytelling.

I used to front a country blues rock band Savanah & The Strays and we travelled throughout WA playing multiple festival slots, musters and rodeos, which was super fun.

Now I thoroughly enjoy the simplicity of performing solo, just me and my guitar, and telling the stories behind my songs. I have released two singles 'Lost In Love' and 'Rainbow' – which you can check out on Spotify.

I sound like... A mix of folk, country and blues drawing influences from artists like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Jewel and The Waifs.

My first gig was... In Year 10 at my school's arts festival – I performed Angus & Julia Stone's version of 'You're The One That I Want'. Still one of my favourite songs to perform.

In the studio I usually... Bring my handy big black book with all my production ideas written in it, and get straight into recording my tunes. I love the whole process of adding the embellishments onto a song, and seeing the song come to life.

I always make sure I have a pretty clear vision of what I want the song to sound like, while also being open to other people's ideas. I'm actually heading into the studio this December to record my EP; I'm so excited.

If I could tour with anyone... Neil Young for sure.

Social media is... Annoying but addictive. Man, I wish I didn't have to depend on social media to promote my art. It is what it is.

My favourite app at the moment is... Australian Red Cross - Lifeblood App. Come on, do it! Donate blood and save some lives. The app makes it super easy.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... I went to a park with my sister and best friend – aged 11 – and got chased by a friendly dog. I was laughing and crying at the same time; in the end I wet myself and had to walk all the way home, haha!

Life on the road can be... Challenging yet rewarding. Nothing better than hitting the road on your own and getting out of your comfort zone – doing your own thing, going to new places and meeting new people is where it's at.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... Food. Any type of food too, I'm not fussy.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... While on holiday in Exmouth I went to Graveyards Beach at dusk to see if I could spot any turtles. I parked my van, ventured through a heap of dunes, and saw so many turtles it was wicked!

I soon found myself lost in the dunes at Graveyards in the dark with only 2 per cent phone battery. I was super disoriented and wandered around the dunes/ tracks for an hour or so before I finally found my van. Nothing worse than being lost in dunes on your own in the dark haha. And that's why it's called Graveyards. Look it up!

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose... Don't know if I'd want to live in a city to be honest, but I would love to live in New Zealand or Canada.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Jewel, Joni Mitchell and Flea! Jewel and Joni are so inspiring and seem like such wise souls and beautiful people. And I've always been captivated by Flea – he's such a cool dude, super eccentric, and has such a big heart.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us? I'm not the best cook but maybe some tacos. It would be hard to stuff them up, haha.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? I love all furry friends especially my little man Skipper. Cats are the exception though – I honestly can't stand them.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Fireball Whisky.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Never been much of a gym person. Would much prefer playing sports, doing some simple workout routines at home, or going for a walk/ run in the sunshine. You can't beat it.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Hanging the washing on the line, my mum always gets pissed off that I put the pegs in the wrong spots haha.

Do you have any phobias... I'm scared of heights. Made it to the top of Castle Rock though, a mountain near Albany, and walked along the glass platform at the top. Had to film it to prove it of course. I think people could hear me from the bottom.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? 'Survivor' or 'LEGO Masters' for sure.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Probably my sister actually and I'd take all the sour cream out of the fridge and hide it. She's a weirdo and puts sour cream on literally everything haha, she'd be devo.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma?
I live in the country – near Moore River, so there aren't many takeaway places. I would definitely suggest the Seabird Sunset Cafe though – if you're in the area check it out. The best fish and chips in WA hands down, and there's a cool chick serving coffee there on the weekends ha.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Oh this was a hard one. I think Alice from 'Alice In Wonderland'. I'm a bit of a dreamer, also very curious and I like to think outside the box.

Last show you binge-watched?
'Stranger Things' of course. I'm in love with the '80s aesthetic, and the selection of music is unreal. The Eddie Munson 'Master Of Puppets' scene was phenomenal. Long Live Eddie!
