Introducing Brisbane Rapper Massy

Massy
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Still only 17, Brisbane-based rapper Massy (pronounced Marr-zee) is already making waves in the local scene.

After dropping a number of songs on his DSPs since mid-2023, Massy secured a prized spot on the Smoke Signals hip hop Gold Coast event line-up that features Eso and DJ Izm (of Bliss N Eso).

Massy beat out other young hopefuls to earn his shot at building his profile on a bigger platform with the track 'Takeoff'. "So stoked to be given such a privilege to open up for this event," Massy says, who also created a lyric music video for 'Takeoff'.

"I'm pumped, ready to meet all the lads up on stage and in the crowd, a little nervous but preparation is key."

Alongside Eso and DJ Izm, the Smoke Signals show – that's presented by 420 Superstore & Moodstate at Coolangatta Hotel on 6 December – will also feature performances from Shadow, Mesc, ECB Fam, ConeheadZ, Jacky Dubs, Epifane with special guests Wilfred and Boof Heads.

Who is... Massy is your regular Brisbane white boy that has breathed the air of the coast, city, outback and gutters of NSW and QLD.

I sound like... I don't like to say i have a 'sound', but I get inspiration from artists like XXXtentacion, Lil Yachty, JME and 360. If I had to say, I sound like an underground artist.

My first gig is... Happening shortly on 6 December, at the Cooly Hotel at the Smoke Signals hip hop event with Eso & DJ Izm (from Bliss n Eso) and a stack of other cool artists.

When did you settle on your artistic name, and was it a unanimous decision... I still haven't really settled with Massy to be honest. It was a name I came up with one night I liked it. Then after a few weeks I thought it was stupid, but I had already dropped a few songs so, I don't know, I might change it one day, but for now I'm Massy and I'll rep it proudly.

In the studio I usually... My bedroom is my studio – I write, record, eat and sleep in there. Most of the time it's just me punching in on the mic about the things on my mind, but a lot of the time I would be writing.

If I could tour with anyone... My unrealistic dream is to tour with Lil Yachty but realistically, 360. He is such a legend and that would be mind-blowing to just perform with the man.

Social media is... Good for spreading and sharing your stuff, but after that, social media is just a matter of people's opinions and beliefs.

My favourite app at the moment is... FL Studio, that's were the magic happens.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that my rider contains... A box of Lucky Charms cereal and I'm set.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Probably moving from Lismore to Brisbane when I started high school (and the start of COVID).

Moving away from a little town where I knew everyone, to a place like Brisbane where I had no one but my Ma was something I was not prepared for, but I'm so glad it happened. I feel that move left me in a place where I could do nothing but grow as person and build my confidence, but it definitely shook me up and left me in tears for a while.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? LA, only because they have a beach and hip hop is hot over there.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Katt Williams, because he knows all lies. Rick Rubin, is a creative genius. Lil Yachty, just a cool guy.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Mum's just discovered Hello Fresh so whatever they decide to send us is what we eating.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Water, I'm 17 (ask me again next year).

What's the one chore you dislike the most? I mean, who 'likes' to do chores? I used to hate making dinner because it would take the longest, but now I'm grown I kinda like it.

Do you have any phobias... I don't like when I'm not able to see. Whatever phobia you wanna call that. Like I can't stand deep water, or caves and that sorta stuff. Being buried alive is another one.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? I find those shows funny I can't lie. I could never go on a show like 'Love Island'; it would be a piss-take. That's just me though, I'd rather be on 'The Office' or something like that.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I would definitely catfish one of my boys Skayt or Eli, and the other would probably do it with me. I'd just hit him up, make him think I'm a chick and set up a link.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Obviously Maccas is best for a midnight takeaway, but for me, the perfect midnight feed is a bowl of cereal, try tell me otherwise.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Franklin from 'Snowfall'. I'm just that guy.

Last show you binge-watched (and what kept you glued to the screen)? 'Snowfall', Franklin.
