Introducing Brisbane Indie Rock Artist Lucy Francesca Dron

Lucy Francesca Dron is an indie rock musician from Brisbane.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Brisbane-based singer-songwriter and guitarist, Lucy Francesca Dron is starting 2021 by asking 'What Is Next?' on her newest single.

A track about being active and creating new experiences for yourself, Lucy and her band blend alternative and indie rock vibes with her velvety yet piercing jazz-styled vocals.

"It is overall about choosing to put yourself out into the world to create new experiences and enter a new phase of life," Dron says.

"It plays around with the mundaneness of certain aspects of life. Lyrically it's chaotic yet musically it's an enticing reflection of what I was feeling after leaving a relationship and putting myself out into the world as an 18-year-old girl and musical performer."

With a resume that has seen her support the likes of Hope D and Asha Jefferies, Lucy plans to release another EP later in 2021.

Who is Lucy Francesca Dron... I am a 21-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist. I began performing my songs as a solo artist around Brisbane in 2018, but always envisioned my music with a band.

Finally, I found Tex Keane in 2019 who joined the project as my drummer along with my brother Tom Dron on bass.

I sound like... I get told I sound like Jeff Buckley and Amy Winehouse the most.

My first gig was... At Music Industry College for assessment. We did a live performance showcase. Outside of school, it would have been at The Pod in McWhirters Valley Mall.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... It's just ma name.

In the studio I usually... Get super focused and into it and then after about the eighth hour I hate everything I've written and eat lots of food in a very delirious state.

If I could tour with anyone... I'd love to tour with Jaala and Hiatus Kaiyote. I feel that would be a fun time and good line-up.

Social media is... Frustrating and addictive, but useful these days especially as an artist.

My favourite app at the moment is... I always love YouTube; endless hours of anything and everything on there. Have killed many brain cells on that app.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... I have had too many. But probably getting banned from all the Valley venues and not really remembering why was a pretty embarrassing time.

Life on the road can be... Amazing. I would really love to live the van life one day.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... Copious amounts of whiskey please!

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? I have no idea honestly, but I'd need to live somewhere with lots of nature.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? I would cook you dhal. My favourite food since I was a baby. I still crave it constantly and have never got sick of it and it's like the only thing I can cook.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Stone and Wood.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... When I cancelled my membership last week, hahaha.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? I hate vacuuming. It just stresses me out and I forget where I've just vacuumed and it feels never-ending.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? I just could not imagine myself doing that – I would feel so weird, aaahha.

Lucy Francesca Dron plays Black Bear Lodge (Brisbane) 4 March.
