Introducing Brisbane Alternative Punks Monsters Up North

Monsters Up North are a band from Brisbane.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Brisbane emo-punks, Monsters Up North have just released 'All Our Flowers Are Growing Sideways', a song that showcases a grittier side to the four-piece band.

Comprised of Lachy Kerr (vocals, guitar), Cory Neal (drums), Max Lyall (bass) and Lachlan Cope (guitar), this newest single builds on their previous 2021 releases 'Smile' and 'I Want You (To Know)'.

"'All Our Flowers Are Growing Sideways' is about the uncomfortable emotions and insecurities of a relationship," Lachy Kerr says.

"What started as a self-counselling session writing in bed, became a completely composed track without any instruments within a matter of moments.

"Detailing the unspoken side of being with someone, fears of being alone and this deep lust we all have for love and to be loved while also analysing relationships around us like we have the answers."

Who is Monsters Up North... We're a four-piece alternative/ punk band from Brisbane, formed in 2019. We have released a few singles and EPs, and are now gearing up to release our debut album in February 2022.

We sound like... An awkward mix between '90s moody emo and '00s whiny emo.

Our first gig was... 1 August, 2020. Lockdown had just lifted and gigs were finally allowed again. We hit the road, played a sold-out headline show at The Flamin' Galah and never looked back.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... Lachy (vocals/ guitar) came up with the name. Monsters Up North is an almost innocently childish metaphor for depression/ anxiety or any bad thoughts really – we all have monsters in our heads.

In the studio we usually... Are surprisingly productive. None of us can afford to mess around too much.

If we could tour with anyone... The Cure, The 1975 and us. God, imagine that!

Social media is... Unfortunately necessary for musicians in this day and age. We aren't boomers, but I can confidently say none of us really know what the hell we're doing when it comes to social media.

My favourite app at the moment is... Maps, because I get lost no matter where I go. Maps always has my back though. . . usually.

To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... Max (bass) jumped on an amp mid set only to discover it had wheels and created a domino effect of all the stage amps plus Max falling over.

Life on the road can be... Expensive. We spend more on parking than anything else when we're on the road; that should say enough.

If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Mercury Cider and bubble teas.

The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... Lachy K invited the crowd up on stage and climbed the lighting scaffolding at The Brightside, and we thought we were going to get banned after it turned into chaos.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Keanu Reeves, because of everything that is Keanu Reeves.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Anywhere northern England, because of the perfect, amazing weather and the hills. I just want to run up and down them in the rain.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and Laura Dern, so we can recreate the tense dinner scene in 'Jurassic Park' and I'll play Richard Attenborough.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Salmon Philly cheese steaks with hand-cut fries.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? We love all furry friends.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... 1980s Japanese Fender Jazzmasters all in black.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... When I watched 'Dodgeball' starring Vince Vaughn.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Mowing the lawn, the outside bugs me.

Do you have any phobias? Dementophobia. I think losing your own sanity is terrifying, and fearing it so much can feel like it drives you to the point of insanity.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? 'The Great British Bake Off' because I'd get to meet Noel Fielding.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I'd prank Alex and tell him I read on Facebook that his crypto has sky 'rocketed'.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Vapiano Garden City. Shout out to Sergio.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Carl From 'Jimmy Neutron'. I'm just trying to make it out here in a world of Jimmys, Sheens and Cindys.

Last show you binge-watched? 'Squid Game' subbed obviously. What started as peer pressure became an addiction: there were laughs, tears, love and fear, and the show was pretty good too.
