After taking a year off (due to a couple of deaths in the family) from her music, Brisbane singer-songwriter Georgia James has today returned with her second official single, 'On Top'.
A searing slice of alt rock that coos with a grungy feel, 'On Top' is about being in a toxic relationship but staying 'cause the sex is that good."I think 'On Top' is the kind of song everyone can relate to," Georgia says. "We have all been in a situation where you know the relationship is toxic and bad for you but you can't seem to let it go.
"In this case the sex in particular is so good you can't give it up. I think that's something we can all relate too. It's the type of song I think a lot of people will find therapeutic to scream the lyrics to in their cars."
'On Top' also fosters a new creative direction for Georgia as she transitions from the pop-rock of her earlier releases by leaning into her love for blues singers from the 1950s and '90s grunge bands. You can expect more new music from Georgia soon.
Who is... I'm Georgia James and I'm a singer-songwriter from Brisbane. I'm really at the beginning of my career as a musician. My single 'On Top' is only my second single release. I was on a bit of a hiatus throughout 2020; it was a pretty crazy time for everyone. But I'm really excited about releasing music again.
I sound like... I'd describe my sound as a combination of '90s rock with a '50s bluesy vocal tone.
My first gig was... The first gig I played as Georgia James was at the Empire in Fortitude Valley (Brisbane).
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... My real name, Georgia McDermott, isn't very sexy. Sounds a bit dorky, right? So I put my first name and the surname of one of my biggest singing influences, Etta James, together.
If I could tour with anyone... The absolute dream would be to tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers because I've been obsessed with them since I was a kid. But I would also really love to tour with DMA'S. I think they're awesome.
My favourite app at the moment is... I'm absolutely addicted to TikTok at the moment.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... My friends and I found ourselves staying in this really dodgy area of West Philadelphia in a hotel that we think was just a front for a brothel.
There were bullet holes in the walls and all these reviews about the hotel said people come into the room in the middle of the night. We only saw the reviews after we checked in. It was scary at the time, but it's a pretty funny story now.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Stevie Nicks. I idolise her.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? I really love Los Angeles and would love to live there for a while. Unfortunately I don't think that will be happening anytime soon.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Such a hard question but maybe John Frusciante, Gwen Stefani and Eminem. I'd love to pick each of their brains about their varied careers.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Probably chicken korma, although the last time I made it I totally messed it up.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? I ADORE animals, so definitely a lover.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Four Loko. It's this crazy mixed drink from America. When I was in college in Arizona my group of friends and I were obsessed. They make you go very silly and it's a lot of fun.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Before COVID-19.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Grocery shopping. Hello, Hello Fresh.
Do you have any phobias? Just the normal one: spiders. My parents' place is on acreage and big spiders in the house are a reality. The amount of times I've had a spider actually on me. It was traumatic.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? Absolutely not. It looks like total chaos.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Definitely my friend Elise. The amount of times that girl has embarrassed me, she deserves it. I'd probably fill her car with balloons and stick balloons all over the outside. That's actually been done to me before and it was extremely annoying.
Best local takeaway joint for a 2am feed that will leave you with a food coma? I'm a coeliac so options are definitely limited, but I have frequented the Valley Kebab Shop at 2am for a HSP.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Definitely Elaine Benes from 'Seinfeld'. She's short, loud and slightly neurotic.
Last show you binge-watched? 'Mr Inbetween'. It’s such a great show and bonus, it’s Australian.
