Introducing Australian Synth-Pop Duo Chillingworth

Chillingworth are a synth-pop duo from Australia.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With the ability to craft melodic, '80-inspired tunes synth-pop duo Chillingworth's next sonic instalment is due this Friday (9 July).

Titled 'Somebody', it is a bold, flirtatious, shimmering pop bomb with a glittering melody and lush, polished vocals that overflows with synthy hand-claps in the chorus.

"We wrote this song in 2019 after a pretty big season of dealing with comparison," begin William and Holly Chillingworth.

"It encapsulates that feeling that we all have at times, of helplessness that comes with comparing yourself to someone else and feeling like you need another 'somebody' to come and shake you out of that headspace because you can't do it on your own."

Centred around vocalist Holly and instrumentalist William, the duo formed in 2018 and have released a stream of singles influenced by The 1975, LANY and Taylor Swift.

Now working with producer Jackson Barclay (Vera Blue, Winterborne), Chillingworth plan to release more material throughout 2021.

We sound like... Taylor Swift meets The 1975.

Our first gig was... at Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane on a Wednesday night.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... We spent ages trying to think of a name and could never agree on one. Eventually we settled on our last name, Chillingworth.

In the studio we usually... Write and record songs. At the moment our studio is just a laptop and a mic set up in our bedroom. As soon as inspiration strikes we can pen it in straight away, which is handy.

If we could tour with anyone... Absolutely love The 1975 or LANY, so either would be a vibe.

Social media is... A brilliant tool for artists. So much room for creativity, but you've also gotta be careful not to fall into the abyss, if you know what I mean.

My favourite app at the moment is... Chess.com – just going through a phase.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... I nearly passed out at the doctor's office when he brought out a needle.

Life on the road can be... Who knows! Yet to experience a tour, but so keen to hit the road.

If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Holly has specifically requested that I write a bunch of flowers here. So there you go.

The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in was... We were holidaying in New Zealand one November and it was snowing on the mountain range we were staying in. As we were driving down the mountain the brakes and steering in our hire car froze up and we were sliding down the icy road, with no control.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... I say we should bring back Mr T, 'cause why not?

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? We've always dreamed of living in New York, embracing the nightlife and music scene.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party? Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton – guitar geniuses.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? We'd do either Mexican, Thai or Italian. Can't go wrong with any of those.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Lover all the way. Especially kittens.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Caramello Koalas.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... What's a gym?

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Does anyone like chores?

Do you have any phobias? I hate spiders with a passion.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Definitely would not. Introverts nightmare.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Honestly not much of a prankster, not very creative when it comes to that kind of stuff.

Best local takeaway joint for a 2am feed that will leave you with a food coma? Maccas is the only place open that late around here.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? I would have to say Loki – charming and mischievous.

Last show you binge-watched? 'The Last Dance' had us both glued to the screen, and funny thing is we don't even really follow basketball.
