Introducing Australian Singer-Songwriter PennyRoyale

PennyRoyale is a singer-songwriter from Geelong.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With a mantra to turn music into medicine to fuel the body and the soul, emerging singer-songwriter PennyRoyale released her debut EP 'Queen Mechanic' last December.

Her newest single is 'Sweet Charity', a track that showcases a slice of late '70s glam rock and '80s pop produced through a lens of modern production with a lyrical focus on re-connecting with the lost art of giving to others unconditionally.

"This song is about how charity is love, and how SHE as an active pronoun invites us to act more in love and compassion, more through our actions and in our spirit.

"When you can sing SHE as a pronoun it captures more hope and delicacy and evokes a stronger sense of femininity in women."

The artist, who lives in Geelong, cites her influences ranging from Angie McMahon, Julia Stone and Wolf Alice, to Stevie Nicks, Florence Welch, and Cranberries.

'Sweet Charity' is also the first taste of PennyRoyale's debut album titled 'Pure Rapture'. "I'm always evolving as a human being and I definitely understand that I know so little in the grand scheme of things," PennyRoyale says.

"But allowing for that vulnerability feels like a pure expression of who I am, as an artist, and an honest one.

"I have learnt to try and find comfort in the discomfort and that's growth. As William Halsey said: 'There are no great people in this world, only great challenges which ordinary people rise to meet.'"

I sound like... A little Florence. A little Delores. A little Kate Bush.

Our first gig was... In a hall.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... Just over a year ago and yes I was unanimous :)

In the studio I usually... Laugh at bad jokes.

If I could tour with anyone... Coldplay.

Social media is... Relevant.

My favourite app at the moment is... Spotify. I cannot breathe without music.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... One of my most recent was teaching my class art and telling them to "sh.t down" rather than "sit down". A class of eight-year-olds remember everything ;)

Life on the road can be... Adventure of a lifetime.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that our rider contains... Art stuff.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... The dark side of the moon.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be your spokesperson... Eminem so I can learn to speak that fast.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose? London.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Jesus, God and Mary – find out how to get sh.t done in seven days.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Whatever you like. You are the guest. But if you prefer to not have to decide the house speciality is a delicious seafood tagine.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? I saved a Fairy Penguin on the beach yesterday, so LOVER I am ;)

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Real, vintage, French jewellery, all gems, all designs.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... To cancel my membership. Lol.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Cleaning the shower.

Do you have any phobias... I have a phobia of phobias.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? 'Ellen' (does she count as a reality show?).

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I did prank my sister once when she had been living in London for a while and my twin sister and I went over to London and didn't tell her we were going.

We rang her flatmates while she was still at work and they hid us inside and when she came home we casually walked out and said hello. She was literally speechless :) Then some mild hysteria too.

Best local takeaway joint for a 2am feed that will leave you with a food coma? The Indian Chippy 2am feed in London.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Amelie. "Her personality is... quirky, kind, and inventive. Amélie doesn't need real friends; her imagination provides enough entertainment. Her wild, dreamlike fantasies have always given her satisfaction."

Last show you binge-watched? 'The Voice'. Loved when Keith Urban said to never compare yourself to another artist because we are all artists; we are just all different types of artists. That is true diversity and inclusion.
