A mix of ethereal folk-pop melodies married to brooding modern electronic production, 'Do It On My Own' is an ode to self-empowerment from Melbourne-based artist Audrey Mae.
2020 has seen Audrey release her debut single, 'Jeffrey' – a song she penned about the feelings of frustration and betrayal a former parter inflicted on her.'Do It On My Own' builds on these themes, Audrey offering a place of respite for anybody struggling to leave a damaging relationship or dealing in general with the emotional mess 2020 has concocted.
"'Do It On My Own' was and still is my backbone and I hope it can be of use to anyone not only struggling in a relationship," Audrey says, "but also struggling due to the isolated circumstances present in the world right now.
"This can be an anthem of empowerment for anyone feeling lost and alone in the world, no matter what the cause."
Who is Audrey Mae? Audrey Mae is a woman from a small town who wants to take on the world. I grew up in a small area and moved to Melbourne to study the one thing that brings me life and that I'm truly passionate about.
I'd never studied music before, so I learnt a whole new language which was overwhelming but the most rewarding experience I could ask for.
I sound like... Banks and Grimes with a pinch of Charli XCX from production.
My first gig was... I began releasing music in 2020, so as yet I haven't hit the stage as Audrey Mae which is the hardest thing ever! I'm aching to get up there.
When did you settle on your artist name, and was it a unanimous decision... Audrey Mae is my late nanna's name. I got her blessing to use her name as I felt a strong connection with her and my music as she was a phenomenal singer and musician. I aspire to be anything like her.
In the studio I usually... Each session is so different. We generally get quick chords on piano in for the backing and then begin either singing melody/ lyrics or start on the production. Each song is a different story, so each studio session really reflects that.
If I could tour with anyone... It would have to be Banks or Billie Eilish. Both are brilliant performers with an attitude to boot. To command such a stage and captivate an audience is true talent both musically, but also amazing entertainment.
Social media... Can be so brilliant but so dark and twisted. It takes courage to set aside any ideas of hatred towards oneself and release music while promoting it on social media.
I personally worry that I'm being annoying or too 'in your face'. It can also be a damning place for the younger generation, especially young women so we all need to be so careful and choose our images wisely.
My favourite app at the moment is... I wish it was interesting but, Netflix! I get hooked on great acting, and I'm a sucker for a horror film.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... Basically anything I do in the studio. My producer is so patient.
If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... Good vibes and water at the ready.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be your spokesperson? Kanye West. As much as he is called crazy, he is a genius and would speak wonders.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Kylie Jenner as she has one of the biggest businesses in the world and I'd love to enter her mind.
Michael Jackson as he was and always will be the King of Pop. He was ahead of his time and still to this day his music is timeless. To get a glimpse of how he worked would be incredible.
Last but no least, my Mum. I'm continuously learning from her and love the advice she gives me. She's also my harshest critic.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Most likely spaghetti or a zucchini slice. Mum's secret recipes would wow you.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Moet. not that I drink it, but just to have as a token of success.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Two days ago. I'm trying to get back into it, but my god it's hard to get the motivation.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? I'm fairly chill when it comes to chores, but I suppose vacuuming and mopping take the most time and effort. Cleaning out the kitty litter isn't great either.
Do you have any phobias? Seaweed. It's a weird one but it touching me freaks me out.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? 'Big Brother'. I'd love to let my personality shine on a TV show, especially a show that has tactics involved. It'd be so fun.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? My best girlfriend. I recently pranked her and her husband by leaving all the kitchen cupboards open as they weren't awake when I left their house. But I'd love to get a full reel of scaring her.
