Ara Koufax is two producers driving to a beach house in the middle of winter to distill a bleak climate into something warmer.
Though Melbourne artists Sam Gill and Luke Neher have worked together in the past as Naysayer & Gilsun, Ara Koufax is new territory; a collection of material covered in a layer of dust ready to be blown off.
Who is Ara Koufax... We've been making music and video together since high school as Naysayer & Gilsun, but this is a totally fresh start for us.
We sound like… The dissolving of hang-ups.
Our first gig is... Yet to come!
When did you settle on the group’s name, and was it a unanimous decision… We wanted to give it a slightly ambiguous name — one that could be an individual. ‘Koufax’ was always on the list, but seemed too clean so we added the ‘Ara’. The more gender confusion the better.
In the studio we usually… Work separately but iron-out the best ideas together. Most of the Ara Koufax material came out of one weekend away at a mate's beach house. Constant improvisation and a lot of digging for the melodies and loops that were actually half decent among the trash.
If we could tour with anyone… Andrea Pirlo.

Social media is… A powerful and career-driving pain in the neck.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time… Luke once accidentally sent back a signed record deal back to a label from his Mum's email address. I thought it was great.
Life on the road can be… A wormhole of fun, shite food and insomnia. We've had plenty of great times and made lots of friends along the way, though. It's a fine balance.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains… The phrase ‘assorted snacks’ is a great test of generosity and imagination.

What celebrity would you love to be spokesperson of the band… Louis CK. No-one does a better job of boiling down nonsense.

Ara Koufax’s debit single, ‘Converge’, is available now.
