Introducing Alternative Rockers Lazy Guns

Lazy Guns are a rock band from Sunshine Coast.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A family band of alternative rockers who heart the '2000s rock' sound, Sunshine Coast group Lazy Guns have a style that fits the same mould of a Grinspoon-Jet hybrid.

Officially starting life at the start of 2022, the band of three brothers and their dad, have been jamming together for half a decade, honing their grungy, alt tones with a string of singles released in the last 12 months.

Their latest release is titled 'In My Shadow' and is a sample of Lazy Guns' forthcoming debut album they plan to release later in 2023.

A deeper family collaboration than the immediate band, 'In My Shadow' was written by frontman Jack and his older sister, Paris Smith. Lyrically, the track is about rising up against someone that has hurt you, and realising you're a better person.

"It was a really spontaneous and special moment between my sister and I that turned out to be one of the strongest and most original tracks from our album," Jack says.

Who are Lazy Guns... We're an up and coming alternative rock band from the Sunshine Coast. We're actually a family band made up of three brothers and our Dad, which is pretty cool. We've released a few singles, with a debut album releasing soon.

We sound like... Jet, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Oasis, The Dandy Warhols. People who follow us say that our sound is '2000s rock'.

Our first gig was... We officially hit the scene as Lazy Guns in January 2022 with our first support slot at Solbar in April that same year. However, we've been playing together for a long time and our first ever 'real gig' was a songwriting competition by a local radio station in 2018 at The J Theatre in Noosa.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... We've actually been playing together for over five years now and during most of that time we could never decide on a name. Pretty much every gig we played before 2022, we used a different name haha!

We finally decided on Lazy Guns last year and we were all pretty happy with that as it pays homage to one of our favourite bands, Jet.

In the studio we... Take our time to produce the best quality work we can achieve and that's what we've done with our forthcoming album.

If we could tour with anyone... It would probably have to be Jet. We absolutely love those guys and their music and if it wasn't for them, were not even sure if we'd be playing in a band today.

Social media is... Kinda annoying. Running our socials can be a bit of work, but we try not to annoy our fans and overload them with posts. We keep our stuff straight to the point.

Our favourite app at the moment is... TikTok. The AI Joe Rogan voice trend is the best thing ever.

To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... The university I attended asked us to play at their end of year festival/ showcase at NightQuarter and this was back when we didn't have a name. I forgot to supply the coordinators with a name so when we arrived on the night, a huge poster of the bill simply said 'Jackson Family Band'.

Life on the road can be... Cramped. But at least with an all-family band it ends up being pretty fun. Our parents used to take us on a lot of road trips as kids, so we've had some preparation for it.

If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... Good quality mic stands.

The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... Back in the day, we arrived late to a school show and completely missed our performance. That was kinda funny and scary at the same time. At least it taught us to be early.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Jack Black. No reason needed. He's just the goat.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? London maybe. London sounds pretty cool.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Dave Grohl, Stephan Jenkins, and Dave Chappelle. A couple of rock stars and one of the best comedians of all time. Sounds like a pretty good dinner party.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Greek BBQ.

When it comes to pets are you guys a lover or hater of our furry friends? Definitely pet lovers. We have a staffy-border collie cross who was named after the Eric Clapton song, 'Layla'.

No matter the expense, send us a case of... Beer.

The last time we saw the inside of a gym was... Probably like a year ago for all of us haha.

What's the one chore you all dislike the most? The three of us hate mowing, but Dad loves it so it kind of works out.

Do you have any phobias... Breaking a string on stage. I think the technical term is 'Brak-a-string-a-phobia'.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Only if it was a live-action remake of 'Total Drama Island'.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Probably just put way too much chilli powder in their food.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Our usual go-to after an 11pm show is 24 nuggets from the old and faithful, Maccas. Doesn't feel good the next day though.

Which fictional character best describes your personalities? I feel like we're kind of similar to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, expect without the mutant, ninja, or turtle parts. We just stir each other up a lot.

Last show you binge-watched? 'Better Call Saul'. It's just a great show.
