Introducing Alternative R&B Singer David Mac

David Mac is an alternative R&B singer based on the Gold Coast.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A member of Gold Coast rockers New Age Notion, David Mac has just released his debut solo single 'Nobody But You' that showcases a new artistic direction for the indie artist.

Influenced by the likes of The Weeknd, Mansionair, Billie Eilish and Frank Ocean, David is now exploring alternative R&B soundscapes.

"My sound on 'Nobody But You' is an invitation to a whole other calming dimension," Mac says.

"Written at an important time in my life, the song describes the overwhelming yet elating feeling of loving someone for the first time who matches your exact energy.

"I am determined to continue releasing music and putting on shows that touch the hearts of those who connect with being true to yourself and exploring the unknown.

"Thank you for all your support and for being very patient with me on this new journey of mine. . . I hope that some of you can relate to it."

Who is Dave Mac... I am an alternative R&B singer, songwriter and producer from the Gold Coast. I’ve been singing since I took my first baby steps, and have been fond of playing the guitar and making music from my laptop.

I enjoy making music with an ethereal notion to it, and have always strived to write meaningful lyrics and produce the best possible version of a track. I am also a bass player and back-up vocalist in a band called New Age Notion.

I sound like... The Weeknd, Billie Eilish.

My first gig was... With my band, New Age Notion, at Mo's Desert Clubhouse.

When did you settle on your artistic name, and was it a unanimous decision... My real name is David McErlean. David Mac just sounds neater.

In the studio I usually... Experiment with a range of synths, chord progressions on my guitar and use studio time to sharpen up my vocals.

If I could tour with anyone... The 1975. This band has greatly influenced my style of music and their live shows are simply breathtaking.

Social media is... A great way to express yourself. If you use it the right way, various platforms can be used to showcase talent or promote a brand on a mass scale.

My favourite app at the moment is... Calm. I'm a bit of a meditation junkie and this app has a range of guided mediations, sleep stories, music, and weekly courses that have definitely benefited me. The 'daily calm' feature is an excellent way to check in with yourself each day.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... When I accidentally flushed a toilet roll holder down the toilet in an Airbnb I was staying at in Canada. Whoops.

Life on the road can be... The most eye-opening and adventurous experience. Exhaustion is inevitable, but depending on what you make of it, life on the road will either be a positive or a negative experience.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... More controllers for my Nintendo Switch.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... I did get robbed while working at a fast-food joint as a teenager. I wish for no one to experience that ever.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be your spokesperson... David Attenborough or Morgan Freeman. I could listen to these two for an eternity.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Los Angeles. It's basically the Gold Coast on steroids.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Quentin Tarantino, Joe Rogan and Duncan Trussell. This conversation would be very interesting.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? I make a mean omelette. That's about it.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Lover. Especially dogs.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Coronas.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Yesterday.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Probably doing the dishes by hand. It's the most tedious thing ever.

Do you have any phobias... The phobia of not having a phobia.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? Probably 'Big Brother' because the activities and household tasks would be really fun.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? My brother. I'd probably put wasabi in his burrito.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Any kebab shop.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Tyrion Lannister. He uses his wit to overcome obstacles despite his height. Sad reaccs only.

Last show you binge-watched? 'Ted Lasso'. This show is so heart-warming and is exactly what we need during the pandemic.
