Introducing Alt Rock Indie Artist Matt Joyce

Matt Joyce is an indie artist from Melbourne.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A solo artist from Melbourne, Matt Joyce is bringing back '90s alt-rock vibes.

After being in touring bands and acts for a decade, Joyce broke out with his debut single 'No Surprises' last year.

He's followed that with his first release of 2022, the playful, catchy 'Drink My Booze' that features acoustic guitar and record scratching.

"I wanted to create a nostalgic theme behind the lyric [the song explores the emotions of missing an ex-partner], so even if you couldn't relate to the words, it would trigger something familiar to you and make you want to listen time and again."

I sound like... It's hard to define and I've asked a lot of people, but the main conception is a mix of Dominic Fike, easy life and '90s bands like Sugar Ray and Sublime.

My first gig was... I've been gigging for the best part of ten years, but my first gig under my name was to a sold-out crowd at The Workers Club in Melbourne.

When did you settle on your artistic name, and was it a unanimous decision... My parents settled on my artist name back in '95 and it was solely their decision. I had no say, but I'm glad my name isn't Chad.

In the studio I usually... Procrastinate, overthink, panic and then leave with a hit.

If I could tour with anyone... I would love to tour with the likes of Harry Styles, he seems pretty chill. Easy guy to chat to, have a beer with, that sort of thing. He also plays at massive stadiums and would be able to pay me handsomely.

Social media is... Like a recreational drug. Consume it with care and with the right people.

My favourite app at the moment is... TikTok. So many funny people in the world and it's given them a licence to entertain.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... I have a rare genetic disease that voids the ability to be embarrassed. It comes in handy, but is dangerous at parties.

Life on the road can be... Expensive. Fuel sucks. Someone buy me a Tesla.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... Beer, hot chippies and pickles.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... I was in a cab that almost got sideswiped by massive truck. Cab driver ran a red light and it was almost the end of me and three friends.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be your spokesperson... Matthew McConaughey for obvious reasons. . . alright, alright, alright.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? London. Loved it while I was there and would love to go back.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Gordan Ramsay, John Mayer, Sam Fender. The food and banter would be glorious.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Steak, I cook a mean steak.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? If anyone has answered hater, they deserve to be punished. My golden retriever Sammie is the love of my life.

No matter the expense, send me a case of...
Salt and vinegar chips. My biggest weakness.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... When I was watching 'Dodgeball'. I hate the fact I have to go to one in order to keep healthy.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Changing bed sheets. I always forget that I've put them in the wash and go to jump into bed and there's no sheets.

Do you have any phobias... I don't have any phobias, but I have an extreme dislike for glitter. It gets stuck to everything and it's impossible to get off your skin.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? I watch absolutely zero reality TV, but I do sometimes get stuck watching 'Pawn Stars'. So probably that.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Everyone. No one is safe. It would be stressful befriending me.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Kebab shop. A fat HSP with extra hummus and olives.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Probably Marty McFly from 'Back To The Future'. Lots of energy, loves playing guitar and not into doing schoolwork.

Last show you binge-watched? My attention span doesn't usually allow me to binge-watch shows, but I watched a heap of 'Veronica Mars' and now I'm cracking into 'Supernatural'.
