Introducing Alt-Pop Artist Ella Therese

Ella Therese is a West Coast-based alt-pop artist.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

After making her debut last year with the single 'Feelings', West Coast-based alt-pop songstress Ella Therese (pronounced 'Ter-rays') returns with her sophomore release, the striking new single 'Confusion'.

At its core a break-up song, 'Confusion' explores the range of feels (grief, confusion and eventually happiness) one gets when deciding to make tough decisions based on self-care and striving for a healthier mental outlook on life.

"'Confusion' comments on the difficult and confusing circumstances of a relationship breakdown," Ella says, "when you lose someone so completely and suddenly from your life that it feels as if they have passed, without having the closure of that loss.

"While a highly personal and all-consuming experience, hopefully this song relates to many that have gone through a process of grief, confusion and happiness, all at the same time."

Who is Ella Therese... I'm a west coast girl who has spent a fair chunk of time working in the arts. I finally found my voice a few years ago and have been writing, producing and playing ever since. I'm rhythm driven, love a harmony and hope my music moves people with lyrics and great beats.

I sound like... I'm not too sure. I've heard London Grammar from listeners? I would like to say a cross between Banks and Christine and the Queens but I've a way to go. I love a whole range of styles from ultra pop, dark pop, R&B and alt folk so trying to find my unique style somewhere in between.

My first gig was... Melbourne. I booked The Gasometer to show all my mates what I had been up to and it was my first gig of originals at a live music venue. It was ace.

When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... Therese is my middle name, and while people pretty much always say it wrong ('Tereese' instead of 'Ter-rays'), I like that it reflects me, but a different version from the everyday.

In the studio I usually... Lay down vocals. I do a lot of demo producing at home by myself or co-producers like Lawsxn and Lewis Moody, but usually just go to the studio for vox and a mix.

If I could tour with anyone... Right now I'd choose Chela. I love her music and vibe. I think we'd have some bangin' dance moves to share!

Social media is... Not something I enjoy at all, but also find it's the only way to really share music.

My favourite app at the moment is... Ooh good question. Digging Pelaton for an at-home workout but my daily saviour is Insight for some meditation times.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... I hate being embarrassed so have tried to block all these moments out.

Life on the road can be... Incredible. I've never hit the road just for music, so all my experiences travelling have been pretty inspiring. I've learnt my biggest lessons exploring the world.

If you'll have me on your bill, all I ask is that the rider contains... A nice champagne doesn't go amiss.

The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Getting airlifted by a high altitude chopper in the Himalayas.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Grimes, love her vibe.

If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? New York. I've lived there for six months before and always wanted to go back and dig in.

Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... My besties from Melbourne.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? An eggplant parma.

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Such a lover.

No matter the expense, send me a case of... Delicious chardonnay.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Last week, although it's the old-school one down at the surf club so nothing fancy.

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Hand-washing clothes.

Do you have any phobias... Sharks... I have a vivid imagination every time I go swimming.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? I don't think so. . . probably a Survivor-esque one if I had to.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? Definitely a sister.

Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Some falafel place?

Which fictional character best describes your personality? Road Runner? I do speed around doing a million things!

Last show you binge-watched? 'Ted Lasso' was pretty great.
