A singer-songwriter from Queensland, earlier this month Andy Martin released his debut album 'Reverie'.
Across ten tracks, 'Reverie' finds the troubadour showcasing the chapters of his musical journey the past three years, with the songs covering stories of love, break-ups, struggles with mental health and even on occasion, conversations with friends."This album goes into my deepest and darkest thoughts over the last three years," Andy says.
"There's love songs, break-up songs, songs about struggling with mental health, songs about stories from conversations with friends, and songs that I've just fabricated in my mind. That's why I decided to call the album 'Reverie'.
"Music is my outlet and way to express my feelings. I'm so proud of this body of work. It features a number of already released singles, as well as some fun new ones."
Sparkly, glittering indie pop that shines with a sonic warmth and lyrical charisma, fans of Tyne-James Organ, Spacey Jane and The Wombats will find joy within Martin's appealingly honest songs.
Recorded at Brisbane's The Plutonium Studios with producer Aidan Hogg (Holy Holy, G Flip), 'Reverie' was mastered by Bugs' Brock Weston (Beddy Rays).
"Reverie; a daydream; is where my brain was at when writing most of this album. Aidan Hogg and I brought this to life and I am so so proud of this one. I think this is going to be an album favourite," Andy says about the album's title track.
Here, Andy shares a few stories behind some of the songs that feature on 'Reverie'.
Dreamworld
I wrote the bridge for 'Dreamworld' on a drive one day from Toowong to Ashgrove. The hook came to me initially and it's all surrounding imposter syndrome. I pulled over at a nearby park and happened to have my guitar on me, so I wrote it in the car! I built the whole song around a bridge (which I have never done).I was daydreaming of where I was the year before and how far I'd come (but still having a long way to go) with my mental health, dealing with social anxiety and building on all of that sort of stuff.
At Least You're Trying
I was laying in bed next to my girlfriend and she really wasn't feeling it this one specific morning.I think the stigma around going to work every day of your life and being at 100 per cent all of the time is slowly shifting, but it's still built into older generations. I firmly believe that some days just showing up is more than enough.
It was a Tuesday morning and she went to work, so I wrote a song about how she was feeling. I thought it fit the mood well.
Somebody Else
I once got told that I forgive too much and think too much about the good in people. I still hold onto this, ahah.I wrote the chorus of 'Somebody Else' about the constant push and pull between being myself and being somebody else (to please others). I like me and I like who I am, but you are constantly comparing yourself to others.
"Forgiveness is my best defence," is a line that really does sum me up. Sometimes I'm my own worst enemy.
Not That Easy
'Not That Easy' I wrote when I was at a really low point in my life – in a job I wasn't enjoying, COVID was hanging around, I wasn't eating or drinking well, and I constantly found myself sitting/ laying on the floor with a foggy brain. This song was my escape. A little angsty, indie rock tune that still is a bit raw and rough around the edges.
Everyone in the industry has a COVID song and this is one (of two) that I wrote at a baddddd point. I couldn't even bring myself to leave the house for a good month at one point. I'm good now though, so please don't worry people. I just hope you like the song.
