In Tune With RTRFM 92.1: Perth Community Radio Station’s March 2019 News

Fourth State play 2019 Neon Picnic (Perth) 23 March.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

We’re gearing up for Neon Picnic, our annual family-friendly festival on Saturday 23 March at the Hyde Park Amphitheatre.

Bring the kids for arts, crafts and face painting, be tempted by a variety of food trucks including Satchmo Café, The Tapi Truck, Summer 1954, Grey Means Well and The Milky Monster, and for mum and dad, we’ve got you covered with our licensed bar thanks to Feral Brewing and Skigh Wines.

Plus, there's a line-up of killer local acts so you can chill out on the grass and enjoy your weekend, featuring Jere Sosa, The Struggling Kings, Michael Savage, Meraki, Fourth State and Zarm.

Entry is free and you are welcome to come and go as you like. Pull up a slice of grass, bring a picnic, bring your dog and enjoy local music and Perth’s best radio station live.

Plus, pencil into your diaries one of our favourite days of the year, In The Pines, returning to the UWA Somerville Auditorium on Sunday 14 April.

Before Neon Picnic arrives, tune into some of the tracks you can expect to hear.

Fourth State - 'Lost In Dreams'

Creating captivating, sonic universes using a combination of sequencers, live percussion, guitar, analogue synthesisers, loops and Ableton, their Massive Attack and Portishead-influenced trip hop meets electro pop and UK garage sound will have you lost in a dream at Neon Picnic, as they build expansive landscapes with infectious melodies and soaring vocals all around you.

Jere Sosa - 'If Only Love'

Whether playing with his band or busking down at South Beach in Fremantle, Jere Sosa has been entertaining audiences almost full-time since arriving in WA.

His performances showcase the many different styles, places and sounds of Sosa’s musical diversity, forming a cocktail of rock, folk and flamenco that’s the perfect accompaniment to basking in the sun at Hyde Park.

Michael Savage - 'Won’t Die Wondering'

Michael Savage is a local prodigy of sorts, having released three albums in three years, and each have been RTRFM feature albums.

His jangly, emotional, psych-pop will have you daydreaming the picnic away as you hang onto every one of his clever lyrics and chord changes.

Meraki Saxophone Quartet

Ya like jazz? How about saxophones? Four of them to be exact.

Be wowed by the Meraki Saxophone Quartet as they re-imagine all the classics new and old, and make you wish you’d paid more attention during school music class and could play more than a screechy ode to hot cross buns on the recorder.

The Struggling Kings - 'Oceans'

Perth-based alt-rock band who hail from the Kimberly, formed by brothers Luke and Daniel Riches as a way to use their Indigenous heritage to influence their music in a fresh, new way, often using their traditional Bardi language.

Now complete with the recent addition of the didgeridoo to their arsenal, what better way to enjoy RTRFM’s Neon Picnic than with the feel-good vibes and strong rhythms of some of the traditional custodians of the land you’re sitting on.

Zarm - 'Can’t Get Enough'

A quirky and vibrant fusion of roots and island rhythms with soul, reggae, blues, pop, rock and electro colours, Zarm are the perfect match for a picnic in the park.

Let your worries slip away as the band jams, losing yourself in their raw energy and soulful spontaneity in a hazy summer daze.
