In Tune With RTRFM 92.1: Perth Community Radio Station's December 2018 News

RTRFM's James Enderby.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

One of RTRFM’s biggest events of the year, Distant Murmurs is returning to Rosemount Hotel, 459 Bar and, for the first time, North Perth Town Hall next month to showcase some of the best music Western Australia has to offer.

Some of the acts performing include Denise Le Menice, Segue Physical Release, Ah Trees, Wooly Mammoth, New Nausea, Airline Food and Scalphunter plus a heap more. You can purchase your tickets to the 12 January event at RTRFM's website.  So kick off the new year crawling North Perth with your mates complete with killer tunes.

And don’t forget to come get your creative on with us at Postcards From The West. This special, one-off event (15 December at State Theatre Centre of WA) sees local music legends Tangled Thoughts of Leaving, Akioka, Diger Rokwell, Orphans and Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble compose and play a new soundtrack to footage they found in the State Library that they feel perfectly encapsulates the WA experience.

RTRFM’S LIL’ MIXTAPE VIBE

Speaking of killer tunes, here is a selection of five tracks by five different artists who will be bringing the heat at Distant Murmurs 2019, thanks to James Enderby.

Physical Release - 'Under Skin'

Lots of local artists have tried their hand in shoegaze the past few years, but Physical Release, for me at least, are the hammer to the nail head. This track from their cassette released back in June, perfectly blends the ethereal bliss ala Cocteau Twins and Slowdive with sparse drum machines and synths.

Live, they are absolutely captivating, imprisoning the crowd in reverb and intoxicating vocals.

New Nausea - 'Bright Bloody Blue'

This may be a big call but, in my humble opinion, New Nausea are the best live band playing in Perth right now. Albert Pritchard’s frontman-ship is impressive and demanding, his vocals ranging from quaint and quiet for the folkier cuts to blood-curdling.

The song I’ve selected here is one of my favourite tracks of the past couple of years; it’s powerful, emotional and features some of those classic, blood-curdling Pritchard vocal specials.

Tanaya Harper - 'Graceless'

'Graceless' is one of the songs that never ceases to captivate. It’s so elegantly simple: Tanaya’s perfect-pitch voice, her stripped-back guitar work, and lead guitar written and performed by Stella Donnelly all combine so perfectly to create this short, but blissful song.

Tanaya will be a highlight at Distant Murmurs no doubt, not to mention it will be a rare full-band set which will make it that lil bit extra special.

Ryan Beno - 'Ulterior Motives'

Shuffling jazzy drums, winding guitar, piano crescendos and wandering basslines is what you can expect from this excellent group at Distant Murmurs next year, perfect for sitting back and taking it all in after running around North Perth.

This track, 'Ulterior Motives', is as meditative as it is soaring, each instrument introducing itself, combining and building to a point seemingly never reached. If you like the more ‘heady’ side of things, these guys are sure to impress.

Denise Le Menice - 'Heart'

Denise Le Menice is the solo moniker of Ali Flintoff (Boat Show, Dream Rimmy), using the project to channel the pure dream-pop songwriting she is so talented at. 'Heart' relieves that sugar-coated, candy-pop song craving that, let’s face it, we all have and combines dreamy and shoegaze influenced production from The Dandy Warhols or more contemporarily Alvvays.
