In just a few short years of playing together, Sydney rockers Hurst have achieved more than most bands do in their lifetime.
Since their beginnings in February last year, the band has already supported the likes of Glass Towers, The Love Junkies, Dallas Frasca, My Echo and Kingswood.
The band’s first single ‘Whine’ managed to win them ‘Track Of The Week’ on Perth radio station HCR 96.5 and their follow-up is just about to be released.
So how does such a young band achieve so much in such a short time? Where does the band’s explosive energy come from? The answer lies in the humble pizza pie. “Yeah we all love food actually – especially me and Ana,” says drummer Nick Zammit. “Me and Ana love to eat and pizza is definitely something that we all bond over, I know that's kinda weird, but yeah.”
The self-described pizza connoisseurs have even played a couple of shows at a well-known Sydney pizza store, proving their dedication to the cheesy cause. “We've done quite a few gigs at Frankie's Pizza, we love that place. Frankie's Pizza is the best. Just eating pizza and having a drink,” Nick says.
The band have recently released their debut EP ‘IV’, named after the classic Led Zeppelin’s album. “It’s definitely Led Zeppelin inspired. It kind of works cos there's four members of the band and we all love Led Zeppelin. We released it last year towards the end of last year.”
It’s a fitting name, given the band’s ‘70s rock style. Quite often though, the band are described as rockabilly and even vintage pop.
It’s an argument that even the band don’t always agree on. “Me and the bass player in the band actually argue about this a lot. I'd describe it as hard-vintage rock. Plus it has elements of alternative pop,” Nick says.
Whatever you want to call their style, it seems to be working well for the band. Hurst have been tearing up the Sydney rock circuit, including playing a recent gig that attracted far more fans than the band knew they had. “We played a gig recently at Baulkham Hills, and we weren't expecting a massive turnout or anything, we just expected it to be one of those chill gigs, but it wasn’t at all. There were a lot of people there getting into it and the vibe of the gig was really good.”
Hurst play Trainspotters (Brisbane) 18 April and Frankie's Pizza (Sydney) 7 May.
