On a sleepy and overcast Wednesday night (27 January), The Tivoli Theatre is looking a little light on numbers post Australia Day, and it’s obvious that Brisbane is suffering with one, very large party-hangover from the subsequent events of the week.
The crowd may be more intimate than usual, but it is clear to see that everyone who managed to front up was a devoted fan to one of the absolute all-time legendary dance acts from the past 15 years, Hot Chip.

Crossing over to our shores from London, the high-energy seven-piece have never disappointed a crowd since their beginnings. And once again they go above and beyond with another outstanding performance.

Hot Chip opens the set with ‘Huarache Lights’ and warms up slowly to their next track, ‘One Life Stand’. As always, Hot Chip performs superbly with their familiar sound of energetic beats, beautiful synths and nostalgic vocals.
As the show powers on, the dance party is ramping up with ‘Night And Day’ and now this sleepy, little Brisbane crowd is well and truly in the hands of the London band. There is something about Hot Chip that makes you really want to hug the person next to you, and we are all feeling the love now during ‘Love Is The Future’.

The famed intro to ‘Over And Over’ starts and Hot Chip are really turning it up on stage now, as the crowd follows. ‘Need You Now’ and ‘Ready For The Floor’ wrap up the set and Hot Chip leave the stage for a short while before coming back for what will be a spectacular encore.
‘Look At Where We Are’ kicks off the encore, followed by almost every Hot Chip fan’s favourite track, ‘Boy From School'. The unmissable sounding vocals of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard on the synth makes me want to cry old, nostalgic, happy tears, and Hot Chip bring the house down with a glorious, beautiful and warm sound that they are so famously renowned for.

Hot Chip end their set with a musical surprise belting out a gorgeous cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Dancing In The Dark’, which has everyone singing and beaming with happiness. They gradually melt the song into one of my all-time-favourite tracks, ‘All My Friends’ by LCD Sound System.
It feels like the sound just keeps getting bigger and bigger as Hot Chip close with a brilliant, explosive finish. Soaked up in all of the nostalgic happiness, this show brought the sunshine to summertime in Brisbane.
Once again Hot Chip have delivered as one of the best dance acts of our generation.
