Horrorshow @ Max Watts Brisbane Review

National Music Editor, based in Brisbane, Australia.
'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

A late comer to Max Watts (1 July) for Horrorshow's Brisbane leg of the 'Bardo State' tour, it wasn't long before my head was nodding and shoulders rolling side to side as Horrorshow were already on stage.

Solo was owning the stage, prowling from side to side like the seasoned performer he and Adit – situated back and centre with a full arsenal of production tools – have become across the past decade.

Proof was in the crowd pudding, with a passionate and parochial supporter base nodding along to a salvo of joints off the current album, 'Bardo State'.

The night also featured a bevy of the duo's classic back catalogue bangers from 'King Amongst Many' and 'Inside Story'; 'All Summer Long' even made an appearance from the group's debut LP 'The Grey Space'. Mary Jane was also in the room. Bless.

'Ashtray' and 'Cherry Blossoms' were personal highlights, while their 'Walk On The Wild Side/ Can I Kick It?' cover does such a rare thing; it exceeds the original. You can almost bank no complaints from Lou Reed and A Tribe Called Quest. Like a boss Horrorshow.

It was a wonderful surprise to see Freddy Krabs perched behind a wall of keyboards and other gizmos, a brilliant addition to Horrorshow's live crew.

Although I missed both supports, David Dallas and Turquoise Prince both reappeared during the main set, both men an extension of the Horrorshow gang - in spirit and skill - during their time on stage.

When it comes to Australian hip hop, Horrorshow are now OGs with superb, studio production and songwriting/ flows highlighted by one of the album's so far of 2017, 'Bardo State', that is beautifully complemented by a live show packing as much punch as a Jeff Horn right-jab. Hey Manny?

With shows still left in Wollongong and Newcastle this weekend along with a trip to the Apple Isle as well as Adelaide the following weekend, if those are our your neck of the woods get along to the 'Bardo State' show. You won't leave disappointed. Cheers for the amazing feels from Saturday Adit and Solo; truly made my night enjoyable.

Franky Krabs

Maybe Australian music's best, hidden treasure. The former Sticky Fingers keysman added oozing levels [read '70s porno grooves] of texture and soul to Horrorshow's live production. Five-star rating for the man with the black, flowing locks and glee permanently spread across his face like a Vegemite kid.

David Dallas

A rich, deep voice that breathes hope and unity with every word he sings. Brilliant to witness. An enriching voice to soothe your ears.

Turquoise Prince

An outstanding voice... will send the 'good' chills to the centre of your spine. Another gem from Brisbane's hip hop scene you need to add to your next playlist pronto. #tinglingfeels
